    What caliber rifle to get?

And if you'd read prior posts, you wouldn't have to open your mouth to change feet.

    What caliber rifle to get?

Yes. They don't use disguised modern tech molychrome barrels.

Be careful with Black Powder...You never know!

Sounds to me like the rest of 'em had had just about enough of him, the way I read sign.

    What caliber rifle to get?

Yup. only the price-point as bothers me. Better for shooting at longer ranges, imho.

    Hello from Central Tennessee

A'ight. If you're close to Manchester, there's a range out there open to public $10 a day. Pistol, scattergun,& rifle, out to 300 meter.

$1,000 budget (set on stone): What should I recommend?

Yes, quite. I do suspect that may be those who, for their own particular amusement, might not be motivated by pure thrift.

    What caliber rifle to get?

777 works well in my flintlock as long as I prime with BP. Guess, I got a Elven-forged flinter by accident. Yes. Black powder burns at the same rate. In order to vary burn rate slightly, it's granulated. 4f might even give you better results in shorter-barreled weapons. I'd stop short of...

Is pure lead really necessary for muzzle loading balls or bullet in rifle or hand gun ?

To be honest, I haven't experimented much with casting apart from balls, and some hard wadcutters for plinking. I anticipate learning more, and that's why I marked this discussion. I'll be casting for the new barrel and that'll require a bit tighter tolerances.

    Modern powder in a muzzleloader

Well you run into two problems off the bat. Since we are speaking hypothetically, I'm going to skip the are-you-crazy-you'll-blow-yourself-up bit. First, BP needs to be compressed. Uncompressed powder create inconsistent pressure spikes, however, the majority of smokeless powders must not be...

Is pure lead really necessary for muzzle loading balls or bullet in rifle or hand gun ?

I was really only joking, but if it's no trouble, I think the Diablos. They're my second choice after RWS. I don't go about much in winter, so I go through a lot of pellets. Got about 5, 6 seasons in that bucket. Here's the airgun next to a 1891 Mauser. I took the photo to explain something to...

    Steel vs Brass frame differences?

In my humble opinion, if you get a .36, get a '51 steel frame. They (again, IMHO) have the finest balance, which will make you want to shoot it more. In fact, I'd advise you to buy 2. Saves time buying another later on. You'll see what I mean.

    Cheek piece on a Hawken,

One of my Gran'da's favorite sayings: "There are two types of job. One you'll sign your name on the job-sheet, and one you won't."

    Cheek piece on a Hawken,

Nope. They sure did. 1775 to 1783. Surprised you ain't heard about that.

    Cheek piece on a Hawken,

Reminds me of a friend who runs a smithy/range. He turns down people because he knows them. Guy wanted him to re-barrel his rifle. My guy says he's too busy. I know he's got nothing real, so I ask when the guy leaves. "Because Billy-bob there will burn that barrel also then tell everyone how I...

    Cheek piece on a Hawken,

Nope. Englishers are not that smart. They messed with us, didn't they?

Is pure lead really necessary for muzzle loading balls or bullet in rifle or hand gun ?

Thanks much. I'm too broken to hunt anymore so I just shoot paper and steel, spring to fall. I don't care if the bullet shatters to dust as long as it's consistent and I can hear the steel ring. Say... you wouldn't know the composition of airgun pellets by any chance? I use a trap-target and I...

Disclaimer: I'm not being a Richard here, dude. Is that casting from a cold mould?

Is pure lead really necessary for muzzle loading balls or bullet in rifle or hand gun ?

Decided to start with a 1:20 Rice barrel that'll be done sometime next month. Too late to change anything now. I had in mind projectiles in the 350-400gr range. It's a .451 bore.

Paper patch... would have thought of that at some point but you saved me the trouble. Certainly something to explore during my hibernation. I'll be turning a traditional-repro ML into a traditional-looking ML capable of consistent accuracy beyond 500yds.
