As I put my rifle in the safe last night

I could never pull that on my wife. She handles the checkbook and credit card bills. It would be better just to take the guff right up front, than for the truth to show up later and get my butt roasted. Besides, there's no place to sleep on our patio. 😒

    Pyrodex or T7

I don't know about you, but I haven't seen one of those in at least 6 months. Are retailers still doing that any more?

January 19 is National Tin Can Day!

National Tin Can Day? Oh, to have a place to shoot where I could just pitch out a few tin cans and blaze away! I've got the rifle, the pistol, and plenty of ammo, just no place to shoot where I can use improvised or non-paper targets.

    Round balls and obturation

I believe what you're seeing is some gas that escapes around the ball before it obturates fully. The ball in a muzzle loader doesn't HAVE to fully obturate to work, but the more it completely fills the bore and rifling, the higher the velocity, and that results in a flatter trajectory and more...

    Round balls and obturation

The back does indeed start moving before the front by a tiny bit of time, but there isn't a solid slug of compressed gunpowder. That stuff all burns, and any that hits the back of the ball will be burned before the ball is out of the barrel. It's not momentum, but a pressure differential on the...

    Round balls and obturation

Think of the instant the powder ignites, before the ball starts moving. The barrel and ball form a static system for some very small time, the duration of which is immaterial. There are no preferred directions for the force to be exerted, because it's exerted equally in all directions. When the...

    Round balls and obturation

The force on the ball is pressure, which is exerted in all directions equally in a closed chamber, and normal (perpendicular) to the interior surfaces of that chamber. In this case, the chamber is the barrel and the rear surface of the projectile. The force diagram, if I'm remembering my...

    Due for a good film

It was good. They flat copied at least a part of into a Star Trek movie: The Wrath of Khan.

    Gun range lead concerns

Shooting at aircraft landing because they annoy you is NOT part of the 2nd Amendment. The 2A doesn't protect stupidity or criminal activity, which that was.

Would somebody be so kind as to help me identify this Flintlock?

From both pictures that show the pan, I've noticed that there is no way to keep the powder from falling out the end. It's not so much a pan as a scoop. I think you bought a cobbled-up wall hanger here, and I hope it didn't cost much.

    You call that a rifle.

I'd hate to meet up with one of those squirrels. But I'd call him Sir!

    Hello all, another Texan here.

Howdy, neighbor! I'm in Austin, have one BP firearm. It's a Euroarms Remington 1858 NMA, and I haven't shot it yet. Haven't found an indoor range that allows Kydex, let alone black powder, and the outdoor ranges around here have off-putting membership dues.

Bow and arrow verses Flint Guns

Also, many if not most Indian bows weren't all that powerful. You were much more likely to survive, and even continue fighting, with an Indian arrow in you than having been shot.

    WORST DAY AT THE RANGE!

And you can measure your muzzle velocity with a yardstick and a wristwatch, huh? ;)

    Japanese Matchlock Myths

My Dad was a gunner on a B-29 (Bainbridge Belle, if you're interested) He flew 35 missions over Japan and hated them until the day he died -- he explained it with, "The *******s tried to kill me!" I shudder to think what would have ensued if I'd brought home a Japanese girl.

What is it that pulls us into muzzle loading!

Right now, it's just a single gun -- a European Arms 1858 Remington New Model Army. Which I've yet to shoot. But a lot of what I find attractive about blackpowder shooting is the relatively slow pace. If I spend two hours at the range with my Garand, I have to take out a second mortgage. Two...

Flintolock pistol rises, never hit the target :-(

I always enjoy his videos. My thoughts: Another reason for turning the pistol might well have been making sure that the powder in the pan was in contact with the main charge in the chamber. That even makes sense (to me, at least) as to why this method of firing would be depicted on horsemen...

Flintolock pistol rises, never hit the target :-(

The breech is solidly fixed to the rest of the firearm, so when it moves, everything moves. Otherwise, you're violating Newton's laws of motion. That's why you need a tight grip on a pistol with and a firm wrist and elbow, and a firm shouldering of a long arm, so the force is exerted against...
