    Underhammer actions

Greetings. John Taylor an old member from this site like myself use to be based out of Wa. He recently moved to Lewiston, ID. He was making underhammers. He was using solid brass for the actions. They were similar to the Hopkin and Allens just in brass. Attached are two that he worked on...

    Bullet Help

I've never been able to get Real bullets to shoot accurately for me. Seems they work well for some and not for others. I'm in the second group. I have enjoyed the Maxi-balls though. They have even worked well for me in slower RB twist barrels. I've only noticed a slight (and I mean slight)...

Love your research. Just to be sure. It's powder patch and two RB's right? Not patch in between the RB's.

It's time to turn the page..

Hey Mike I'm starting a new chapter myself. I'm about a decade behind you. Retiring in about a 1/2 month. Most of my hunting buddies are either too busy with honey do's or are still working. It's hard to find a good hunting partner that can reliable go. Just had one back out of our...

Flash suppressor for a muzzle loader?

This was a daylight shot and you can clearly see the flash. I suppose if you used 20 grns of powder in a long barrel you could reduce your flash signature.

    Fishing sinkers for round balls

I've used pure and Wheel weights for different applications. For hunting deer and Elk I'll go with pure. For plinking and a needing a deep penetration for buffalo I've been successful with wheel weights. Just remember wheel weights are lighter.

    1/66 twist

For what it's worth. I've had good luck with maxi balls in my slow twist ML. I did notice a slight oblong hole in the paper but they held a very good group 4" at 100 yrds. Oblong being you hand to really look carefully to see it. Not to be confused with key hole.

Anyone Use .45cal or .50cal cast handgun bullets in there rifles?

I've done well with cast bullets in the 300g range from my 45/70. Also used the 405g with good result. I ran them through a rifled sizer that was from the original barrel blank.

I wish they would go online. If they brought back the H&A Underhammers I'd be tickled!

    Round ball calibers for moose?

Like the other fella, I've killed Bison with a .54. I've also killed moose but it was with a .300 Win Mag. Considering what it costs for me to hunt moose, I'd probably take my .62 RB hardcast just for the added insurance. This was with the .54. This was with the .62 RB

Are underhammer rifles frowned upon at traditional shoots?

How I missed this post I'm not sure. But here is a link to a post I did in 2006 about the history of underhammers. http://www.muzzleloadingforum.com/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/189213/fromsearch/1/tp/1/ Also I site the existence of the earliest UH that was from the mid 1700's.
