Have you done a google search? braintan.com has both veg and brain tanned. as for how long that depends much on the "tea" used to tan and how much you do. I haven't done it personally, but have been looking into it heavily and the estimates I gather are a few+ months.. also check out Tandy...

Don't know about walnut hulls for making a brown color in already tanned leather, but I do know a tip I read from a web site on traditional tanning methods. They used tree barks, leaves, etc. They recommended that you get fresh tree bark from nursuries that hasn't been rain soaked or processed...
