I have both if these musket nipples ordered and would like settle on just one so if anyone has actual experience using one or the other please PM me. I should add I'm looking at using either Triple7 FF or FFF powder so I want a good flame from the nipple to the powder

I am confused when you say you are ordering 1/4-28 musket nipples. The rifle muskets I am familiar with require 5/16 - 24 for Springfield or 5/16 - 18 for Parker Hale. What firearm are you buying these nipples for? Maybe then we could relate some experiences.

They're for a .54 Pedersoli Blue Rige

I use the hot shot nipple for some of my percussion rifles. These have worked very well for those rifles.

Order the 1/4-28 rifle nipples. Some people will get confused when you refer to your rifle as a musket.

I've made an error in thinking that I could just swap out a regular nipple for a musket one not thinking that my Pedersoli is not a musket right. I will however swap out the regular nipple with a Spitfire made for it. So please just disregard this posting.

Not to confuse the matter any more, but you can get a 1/4X28 musket nipple that will fit your Pedersoli. Many hunters switch to this nipple for hotter ignition and easier handling in the field with cold fingers. I personally have several Pedersoli guns, and the "Hot Shot" or "Red Hot" #11 nipples work just fine, providing the flash channel is clear.

If you are using T7 FFF, your standard nipple and cap work fine. Pour in the powder and give the side of the stock opposite the lock about 3 good hand whacks to settle the powder into the flash hole area. T7 FF needs hotter caps to ignite consistently, or you can duplex the powder charge with 50-60grs FF topped off with 20-30grs FFF in your powder measure. When you pour the charge in the barrel, the FFF goes in first to the bottom of the barrel. This method gives consistent ignition with any cap.

@Grimord provided the correct answer. A nipple such as the Track of the Wolf RST-MS has the 1/4-28 threads for the Pedersoli Blue Ridge rifle and the cone sized for a musket cap. You will need a nipple wrench sized for a musket cap. Track of the Wolf NW-100.

One really shouldn't need a musket cap if using black powder. A #11 cap or #11 magnum cap should set off the powder charge.

Is there any problem with the musket nipple setting stuck in the hammer or the hammer not hitting the caps? I actually have 1 Ampco Musket and 1 standard Spitfire #11 coming so I guess I can choose then. One thing with the Spitfire is that it uses #11 cap of which I have l 200. Plus I would have to buy another nipple wrench.

Most Pedersoli's have shallow percussion hammer noses, so there should be no problem with a musket cap getting stuck in the hammer. The most important issue is to be sure the hammer hits the musket cap squarely. If it doesn't, you may have mis or hang fires. On some guns, the hammer has to be shimmed out or bent in to get it to hit squarely on a musket cap nipple. As many of the other posters have stated, if you use standard or magnum #11 caps on a spitfire or ampco nipple there should be no issue with ignition providing the flash channel is clear of oil or moisture.

I put the 1/4 x28 ampco musket nipples on my bigger powder burners when im using over 100 gr of powder. i have them on my 2 TC big boars a tc black mountain magnum on my zouave i have a 516x24 anpco musket nipple no need for another nipple wrench a 1/4 open end wrench gets the nipples in and out the base is 4 sided so i just carry a 1/4 wrench with me

Well after thinking of what issues they're MIGHT be with a Musket nipple I just decided to go with a 1/4X28 Spitfire nipple. In fact I ordered 2.
