The key to small groups are powder burned and a lot of shots down range.
There certainly is truth in what you said. I will add though that I know folks who burn lots of powder and still can't make small groups off hand.
Good shots have certain learned abilities as well as built in (natural) ones. Practice brings out the best in both realms.

What you stated is fact! Some people will never be a crack shot but these people can improve. I have taught several young people how to shoot and most shot fairly well after just a few lessons. I also found that women learn faster than men? I suppose they don't have the macho plague that men seem to have? The one major thing I found that wasn't mental or physical concerning M.L. was over charging their rifle. There is no logical reason that I know of for anyone to use heavy loads? It just isn't condusive to accurate shooting.

ummpphh!!!!!! i can do that at 1000 yards!!!!!!!! 🤪 🤪 🤪

if i was that good with a smokepole and rock and a rest, i'd be braggin this one too!!!!
good shooting!!!!!!!

Here’s my .40 calibre again,,,this time 50 grains of powder. Notice how the holes punch nicely through the paper as compared to my previous target. I wouldn’t have thought 10 grains would’ve made that much difference.

Below is my 100 yrd target with 40 grains of fffg, from the .40 calibre

Headed to the range here in a bit to shoot my .54 calibre. I’m really looking forward to seeing how this gun will do after the barrel was re-crowned a couple days ago.

My goodness I’m hot and miserable right now. It’s over 93 degrees on the range today, dead still, clear blue sky.

Here’s my 4 shot group with my .54
Dixie Tennessee Mountain Rifle 36” rebarreled .54 calibre
.530 RB, 75 grains ffg, pillow ticking, moose Mille patch lube

The gun shoots very nice at 50 yrds…shots touching. I just have trouble seeing the target at 100 yrds, I tried putting tape at edges of the mid point of the target…but I really couldn’t see the tape

At 50 yrds, I’m dead center and 1/2” high, below are my last 3 shots at 50 yrds. I need to be shooting higher, I like to be sighted in at 1 1/2” to 2” high at 50 yrds. My normal hunting load in a .54 is somewhere between 90 and 105 grains of ffg. I have not yet developed a hunting load for this gun, but I suspect that a full hunting load will bring point of impact up to where I want it. For punching paper…75 grains is nice and doable.

Shot this at 100yds from the bench while filing the front sight for correct elevation. Once it stops raining here, I'll finish filing the front sight and actually give it a try offhand, with a larger sheet of cardboard!

It has been said the only way I'll be successful is to shoot it at 25yds. :thumb:

My best 100yd off hand target so far. Club president called them as I shot them. Rifle .40 caliber caplock .395 ball, 018 patch, 40 grains fff
I generally suck at shooting, but sometimes I get a ribbon here and there for individual targets. There is so much that goes into this between you and the target down range.

This is my first crack at this rusted .54 renegade barrel with a 1in 48 twist. I’m shooting patched round ball from a rest at 50 meters. I still feel that this needs much work here. I pulled my second shot to the right, but the rest are high with my mean point of impact 4” above the target center. “Minute of deer”? This is 80 gns of triple 7 ffg
