What are peoples thoughts on the 1766 French Infantry Muskets available through Discriminating General?

Accurate? Inaccurate? Well made, poorly made?

They are an inexpensive source for a reasonable musket if you want to blow smoke at re-enacting events. You have to drill your own vent which is not a good sign although Henderson has written that their guns are made to withstand strong loads with a lead ball.

They are very weak in supporting their guns after the fact. You cannot get parts or support from them. It is pretty much a replacement situation for a short period after the sale -- if you can find them.

There are a lot of nice markings and the fit seemed pretty good.

I have a Bess from them.

It was damaged in shipping, but I was able to patch it back up by straightening the cock screw and recutting the threads. I also had the rebend the cock. They had not packed it very well.

Threads on most of the items such as ramrod, lock bolts and cock screw were so badly cut that they needed to be rethreaded.

The wood was clubby and I reshaped, restained and refinished my Bess. The main spring cracked and they did not respond to inquiries regarding parts, but responded to inquires regarding my interest in a Charleville. :hmm:

As to the Bess there is way too much wood and it is inordinately heavy.I looked at some purchased by a local reenactment group and the one I handled felt like I was handling a 15 lb. chunk gun.

That would make me REAL nervous about the breech threads. :shocked2:

Marc,
My experiences with Mil. Hertiage was when I bought a M1777 French musket. The wood was far too chunky and the metal parts were ill-fit and formed poorly. I sent it back, and although Mr. Henderson accepted it without questions. He claimed I was the only person ever to return an M1777 musket, I found that hard to believe.

Cheers,

I was very interested in a sea service pistol from this selfsame company.Too bad, the pictures I saw were beautiful,so disappointing.Mr. MarcStephen, thank you so much for this post and to all you who replied.Best regards,J.A.

I bought a 1756 english sea service pistole from MTV and I have had a wonderful time shooting it. It is a fun gun and I was quite surprised by the accuracy at 25 feet. I used an IPSIC pistol target and crossed it with duct tape to represent a soldiers crossed belt. I kept all of the rounds in the kill zone. It is one heck of a lot of fun. I want to try shot in it next.

For anyone who needs the distinction: (MVT) of Middlesex Village Trading Co. and The Discriminating General are two different companies. I have had good experiences with MVT and they have stood behind their products for me.

I just bought the New England Fowler today at Dixons Muzzleloading Shop which is imported by MTV. I already fired 25 rounds with only 1 misfire which was corredted when I picked the touch hole. They also had a 1717 French Musket from MTV and I asked my wife to pick which gun to buy and she also had a hard time deciding between the 2 guns. My wife and I kid around about what she considers ugly guns and pretty guns LOL. If you want a French Musket you might want to take a look at this one on there site.

I've heard very mixed reviews for Discriminating General / Military Heritage's guns. I just emailed Loyalist Arms last week and it looks like they'll finally have their prototype for the '68 Charleville in a few weeks. Personally I'm waiting for those to go into production before I get a Charleville, as MH leaves a little to be desired and the Pedersoli's don't really match any of the original 66/68's that I've seen (plus they're way more expensive than LA's).

Who makes the MTV guns and how is the over all quality. They don't seem to be priced badly at all.

Nevermind!...I just reread the FAQ section on their site!
How many of you have these guns, and are you satified?

I have a brass barrelled blunderbuss from MVTC and I really like it. It's a bit rough around the edges and it's bedded with Indian newspaper but it shoots great and they guarantee their locks for life.

Thanks for not buying the 1717, since I bought it yesterday.
