There was quite a bit of competition between pill, tube and cap lock.
John Manton stayed with the flint until finally gave way to the cap lock in 1825.

YES Forsyth patented his percussion lock in 1807. The referenced ad speaks of the Forsyth lock....

But it was NOT a percussion cap-lock, sorry folks.

Forsyth patented the "scent bottle" lock.

This was followed by the "Tube Lock", and then was finally transitioned to the cap-lock that we use today, where a copper cap filled with the percussion mixture was placed over a nipple, and patented in 1822.

William Foster Harris in his book "The Look of the Old West, A Fully Illustrated Guide," on page 49, states the percussion cap was the invention of "Joshua Shaw, American artist, who, in 1814 glued some of the touchy powder inside a little cuplike cap, first made of iron, then of pewter, then, finally, after 1816, of copper." The "touchy powder" he referred to was the compound invented by Rev. Alexander John Forsyth.
