About a month ago I picked up a derelict “Baba” musket from a GB auction. It was fairly dirty, and I hit the jackpot of that brown patina in the barrel. If nothing else I could use the parts from it for my other projects.
After handing it, I seen the true craftsmanship that went into it even with the odd looking butt stock that looks like a fishtail. I wasn’t able to find any markings on who may have crafted this 1834 Springfield musket into what it is now. I cleaned it up, did a little stock repair, cleaned the patina out of the barrel, and it’s ready for the field now. I took a picture of it next to my other martial arms to give some perspective of how much wood was removed from the stock. A neat old musket to be used again if I do say so myself.

I like what you did with it! That hammer looks much better than the one that was on it.

I hope they packed that Springfield better than the SxS shotgun I bought from them. It arrived flopping around inside the box and broken at the wrist. Totally unacceptable packing job with next to ZERO void filling.

Luckily they refunded me.

Very interesting, but technically, that is a ‘crescent’ butt stock, w/ some fishtail design elements incorporated.

This is fishtail butt from that of early muskets, this one a pre-flintlock English lock musket, of lateral sear through the lock plate.

That’s a whale of a tail! Mine is kind of like a small trout tail…. 😂

Were you bidding on that too? Mine was packed good, no problems there. That’s a bummer!

That hammer that was originally on there was oversized and had lots of play in it. Had to be changed, no saving it.
