That’s great. I’m glad you’ll be able to hunt this year. I look forward to you contributing to this thread.

I don’t have any diehard squirrel hunting friends. It’s nice to have a group here to share with.
Friends and Hunting bubbys are few for me also, sad but true. Having this group to share is great, I told my wife that the other day. 1 of my best Hunting Buddys died in 2000, another is all messed up from his cable breaking on his climber, broke his neck and about died. He can barely get around, that was about 3 years ago, we are going Hunting 1st weekend of October. My other Buddy is out in Nevada.
I have my Wife and my Ole Slough Dog..
That's another reason I like this Forum..
Let's Keep on Keeping on..

Been a bit too warm for me here in Eastern PA. At least on the days I could have gotten out. Might be another week or more before I get in the woods. I am excited though.
Salty, hopefully things will cool down up there in PA so you can get out soon and hunt some squirrels.

Well one thing is for certain. The temps are definitely cooling down of a morning here. Makes it much more enjoyable being out in the woods.

Also, while I was up in my ladder stand yesterday morning deer hunting I could have easily killed 4-5 squirrels. Man, how tempting that was. They knew I was out of place but they just couldn't quite figure it out. Several squirrels within a few yards just hung on the side of trees and looked at me. Then there were two sitting on a stump just looking.

Good Morning, Jim.
Beautiful Gun.
You did get one, plus out in the woods that a win.
Let us know how ya did with the
Crockett Rifle.

I read some good and bad about the Crockett Rifle, I was saving up for a Kibler SMR in .32 caliber for fun and mostly Squirrel hunting. I was half way there, not sure if I would have it before Squirrel Season.
I reached out to an individual on this forum, he shared his opinion, which I appreciated.
I bought one and very pleased with it.
I'll have a couple weekends to do more practice shots, then Henry and I will go out and hopefully get some Squirrels.
Again let us know how ya did.

Out in the woods yesterday scratching around for a place to deer hunt. Found a suitable trail, a tree to climb, and did a little trimming of a few small limbs to clear out a shooting lane. And would you know it, one big ole, crooked tree I leaned up against is another den tree. Just happened to have looked straight up and saw a larger gray squirrel go into a hole way up yonder.

I'll remember that one for later on. :)

Still seeing a fair amount of squirrels all over the place. Down below the house here, in the roads eating something that had dropped out of overhanging trees, on the roads dead, on the side of roads and/or crossing roads, and no matter where I go in the woods/mountains, I'm seeing squirrels scattered out. So, there's still plenty of squirrels around these parts.

Still waiting for later on when the squirrels are out and about on the ground picking up nuts to store up for the winter, especially walnuts. Never seen so many walnut trees in one general area, so I am hoping for a lot of action whenever the squirrels begin to pick on walnuts.

But I must get a couple of deer in the freezer first.

Well, I’m embarrassed to say I took the Crockett in there yesterday and it was a perfect morning. Forty nine degrees, sunny, calm and the squirrels were active. I got two shots and missed them both. My shooting has been poor this year!!
But I still enjoyed the day. I moved across the pipeline and found several hickories over there. I’ve got a week before archery season starts. And a rainy week so they’re saying. Once archery season starts I’ll stay out of there because it gets hunted pretty hard.

Were you taking a rest off trees or offhand shooting?

What was the distance(s)?

Good afternoon, John.
That look like Chicken/Hen of the woods to me...
Not 100% sure.....
And remember what they say about wild mushrooms if in doubt throw them out.

If you could get someone to positively identify them as chicken of the woods they're good eat do not eat if you don't know for sure.
Cool pictures.
I have a free app on my phone called PictureThis that identifies plants. You take a photo and in seconds if will tell you. I have used it for mushrooms before. Those look like chicken of the woods (sulfur shelf), I find them to be rather tough and chewy so don’t eat them. Again, unless positive don’t eat them.

BillyC. Good Evening.
I have seen that app on a buddys phone, I plan on downloading it.
I've had that experience with both Beefsteak mushrooms and Oyster Shell mushrooms. Mostly good flavor and texture, a couple times off taste, chewy & tuff.
I was told by an old timer that the off taste and chewy texture was that they were probably out for a few days before we picked them.
When in doubt throw them out.

I don't eat mushrooms because deer pee on them. :)

Worse. I have shooting sticks I was resting on. 15-22 yds. Pathetic!!

I shoot 2-3 days a week all summer. I have no excuse.

Hopefully it turns around. I don’t want to break out the .22. Lol
I wish you the best.

IDK bro, other than perhaps try to settle down a little. It know for a fact that sometimes whenever I'm really striving to do something, even squirrel hunting, I often over strive. After I settle down a bit and take my time, things often improve.

Also, as I have previously stated, I have found the Crockett Rifle does not like a tight hold. Every dang time I choke down on it, its a miss. I find that, depending on the particular shot on squirrels, I have a tendency to choke down a bit while striving on the more difficult shots. In turn, it makes things worse. Never tried any of those shooting sticks but I have found that, generally speaking, a fairly large diameter tree with a little looser hold makes the best and most stable rest for my Crockett while squirrel hunting.

However, I have done quite well taking a rest off of smaller trees in the 3-4 inch diameter size.

The only wild mushrooms I will pick and eat are morels and chanterelles, pretty hard to go wrong with them and they get washed and cooked first, nothing eaten raw. LOL
