I have not been aware that we have red squirrels in this portion of SW Ohio until the other day. Thinking it a small grey squirrel I was looking at only research online to find it a completely different animal altogether. What a pretty little creature. Was thinking it is a species not allowed, as I only see greys and fox squirrels around here, but was glad to check the ODNR booklet to note that red squirrels are legal game in this state.
Many years ago while hiking in a state park we saw a flying squirrel holding fast to the side of a large tree about our head height. Those are very rare and definitely off limits to hunt. Not much bigger than a chipmunk, whereas the red squirrel looks to be about twice the size of a chipmunk. Still smaller than gray by about half.
Two Fox Squirrels hopped past my window as I typed this. Glad to have a healthy population of these critters around, to hunt and watch.
