Hope this is the right place for this.
I recently purchased some Jim Shockey Gold in 3f for load development, and instantly noticed it is more coarse than all of my other 2f.
For comparison, I have:
Goex 2f and 3f
Triple 7 in 2f and 3f
Pyrodex RS and P
The JSG in 3f is by far the coarsest of the lot.
It seems to shoot OK, no hang or delayed fires or anyhting like that. But I'd like to try some in 2f and was concerned about the granular size.
Does the JSG run a little more coarse than the other equivelants?
FWIW
I'm shoot'n PRB in .50cal TC Renegade with GM-IBS.

In my opinion the;
Goex 2f and 3f
Triple 7 in 2f and 3f
Pyrodex RS and P
is better than JSG so I wouldn't even go there.
(I would dump the T7 also but that's just me)

I believe the correct answer is, Yes, the JSG powder is noticeably courser than any of the other powders except American Pioneer which is about the same stuff.

In the tests I've read both of these powders are also noticeably weaker than the other substitutes or real black powder.
This results in lower muzzle velocities per volumetric grain measured.

Yep. If it looks like fish tank gravel, it's JSG  and will shoot about 200 to 300 fps slower than an equal charge of GOEX or Pyrodex.

The APP looked like kitty litter. And sometimes bright eyes over there to the left shot better groups in her box.
