Thankyou for posting a picture of the mould. By the looks of the REAL mould, it has a flat base, not a hollowed or skirted base. So does this mean it is not really a minie? Does this type of mould seal off the escaping gases without said skirt?
I only ask because I will be experimenting with a 40 S&W pistol mould (.401 cal) in my 40cal. I think it has a flat base too. I will also be experimenting with paper patching.
I have seen it printed somewhere that you use 30% less charge when using a minie compared to a PRB.
Well, I looked, and what I have are T/C Maxi Hunters, not REAL bullets. The Maxi Hunters weigh 350 grains, and if you would like to try them I'll send you some to try, but they're not really what you are looking for. Sorry.
Once again thanks for the info. I appreciate the offer for the REAL bullets! I think I know a place I can get them here local. If not I may PM you Blizzard! If I have to buy a larger amount and don't like them I can always melt them down, afterall they are lead! :rotf: :rotf:
Jarikeen I can't answer that, cause I am new to this bullet. That's what I am trying to do is find out some info on it! IMO the mold does look like its going to pour out flat bottomed and that may be why the felt wad is required to prevent blow by. :hmm: If that is true I believe you would be correct in the assumption that would make it not a true minie!
it is a flat base slug. not a true 'minie-ball' which has a skirt that obturates into the rifling. Lee says that the pressure of firing does obturate the REAL - I do know that groups tighten up when I use a felt wad overpowder.
the 'maxi-ball' makers claim the same thing, that pressure squeezes the slug.
I know that my REAL's shoot a lot better with a over powder wad. I make my own for 45 & 50. In my rifles the heavy powder charge tends to shoot a little better. Also mine seem to like bullets that are a little harder than pure lead.I make mine out of reclaimed lead shot. Ron
Yea thanks for the info Deadeye. I found a guy on Ebay selling 320 REAl bullets for what he wants and shiping I can just about buy the mold.
I figure I am going to go ahead and buy the mold. The way things sell on Ebay if I don't like it I can probably sell the mold for more than I paid for it! :rotf: :rotf:
My 50 is a Green mountain 1-28 twist is 28" I think. The charge is 100 gr of pyrodex RS
The 45 has a 32" long barrel 1-18 twist I shoot 80 and 90 gr in it. Ron
I use a mild charge of 60grs. under mine. I have not tried a veg. wad under yet. I will; sounds like a good idea. I lube the REAL bullets with two coats of liquid Alox.
