I have a Hawkin 50 cal rifle made by Investarms. Is it possible to get a barrel in 36 cal to interchange with the 50 cal barrel. I would like a 36 cal to play with but can't afford to buy a new rifle.
What do you experts think on the matter. I mean that as a compliment. I have gotten a great deal of good information off this site an enjoy it very much.
Thanks
Fred

I hesitate to reply lest i end up placed in the category of "expert". An expert being somebody who no longer has the flexibility to change their mind! :)

However, I'll throw out an in-expert opinion! :haha: Any of the barrels that will fit the Lyman rifles will fit the invest arms. Reason being is that they are on and the same. Still, I don't think that option is offered by invest arms.

You can get the Green Mountain Interchangeable Barrel System (IBS) to fit your rifle. Once again, they probably do not have a .36.

Now for some in expert assumptions! :) You probably have a 15/16th barrel width so that is the size barrel you will need.

Here is an example of an IBS barrel system;

You will notice that there are no .36 cal 15/16ths barrels offered. That means you will have to go semi sorta custom. Get your barrel from another supplier such as Rice Barrel Co;

and fit it yourself to your existing rifle or have someone else do it for you. It is not difficult to do. Even I can do it! :haha:

You can see that you will end up with a pretty good investment but certainly less than a dedicated .36 cal rifle.

As marmotslayer said, it is doable, but you might be able to find a used small cal production rifle for about the same cost as having a new barrel set up for your gun.

You might check the gun auction sites, the trade section of this one, or Track's used guns, to see what is available and at what price. You might have to shop around, for a while, to find what you are looking for, but an occasional small cal ML shows up for a good price.

If you decide to have something made up, be sure to tell the person who takes your order what you have in mind, and what kind of gun you will put it on, so's they can install the correct breech/tang.

Then, you will probably have to file down the new tang to fit the existing inlet, if it's not a hook breech. If your gun has a hook breech, the stub will have to be fitted to the existing standing breech.

In other words, a custom made drop-in may not drop straight in, unless the barrel maker/ gunsmith fits everything to your stock.

Just kinda thinkin'...typin' out loud, so to speak...type.

God bless

Yes you can find a 36 caliber barrel that will fit your 50 caliber hawken.
But the weight is going to be nearing the same as if you had the 50 caliber as the width of the flats for both barrels has to be the same to fit.
Also you may find that the feel of the rifle is slower with the smaller caliber as you have more steel in the barrel then you do in the 50 caliber.

I bought a drop in GM barrel in 32 cal for my tc 50 cal hawkin but I don't know if they still make them . Buy the way the 32 is ten times more accurite than the 50 ever was, it is a little heavy though there is no getting around that fact but it's so worth it, a keeper for sure.
