I have an old .36 cal. Green Mountain barrel that I'd like to build into a rifle. I can only find one pre carved stock with a 5/16 ramrod hole. Can you use a 3/8 hole or will the entry thimble break through? Thanks

Why would you want use a 3/8" hole?
If you try to stick a .375 diameter ramrod into a .360 diameter bore it won't fit.

If you use a 5/16", .312 diameter ramrod, it will fit the hole in the stock and it will easily go down the barrels bore.

I don't want to use a 3/8 hole but that's about all I can find out there. I was wondering if you could make a 3/8 work.

Are you saying that you want to buy a stock with a 3/8" ram rod hole drilled in it and if you can use a 5/16" ram rod in this stock with a 3/8" ram rod hole drilled in it :hmm: ???

No. I'm saying that I'd like to buy a stock with a 5/16 hole but the only one I can find is a Bedford style from Pecatonica. I was wondering if a 3/8 hole would work if that's all I can find.

If you are going to have a 3/8" ramrod hole you are going to have a 3/8" groove heading to the hole, 5/16 thimbles would look a little odd sitting in that 3/8" channel.

If you have someone profile you a stock blank I am sure you can request any size ramrod channel you want. I would call around and ask them. They do this stuff to order for the most part and you have to send your barrel to them so they get it just right. I have had three done and always told them what I wanted.

I bet this guy could do it;

Thanks Eric, That's what I thought. Track even lists 2 southern style stocks for .36 cal. that both have 3/8 ramrod holes. I don't get it.

I got a stock from Pecatonica. When I ordered, they asked me what size I wanted the RR hole.

i'm working on a rifle right now that is set up that way in .36 cal. 3/8 hole and using 5/16 thimbles and ramrod. when finished, I think it will look fine. it is funny that everyone is offering their stocks that way.

You could shave the RR down from 3/8" so that it would fit a 36 cal. Most 3/8" RR's won't fit so they slide well through 3 well spaced 3/8" pipes anyway.

Otherwise, if you contact Dave Keck, he will make you just about anything with dimensions you want, (that he makes).
