I've never heard anyone say the 58 points good. I certainly won't. It's a clunker made for girly hands. :blah:

You're hearing me say it now, Pete.
It points good. It shoots straight. And it fits my "girly hands". AND IT SHOOTS WELL ON PYRODEX! :blah:

It's an inline. It will shoot any sub except BH 209.

It still doesn't point though. Clunker.

All of the cap and ball guns have their place and their fans. Personally I like them all. I do have a special place in my heart for the Colt 1851 Navy. I think it is one of the most beautiful handguns ever built. Some repros build them in 44 but I like to be as realistic as possible so mine are all 36cal. When I want a gun to make noise, I pull out a Dragoon on a Walker. When one of those goes off, you know it!

:dead: :stir: Keep pouring gas on this fire! Just kidding Capt.!

I have 2 '58's, well actually one is a gift to my son (a blued Uberti) and the other is a 12" stainless buffalo the wife bought me for Christmas a few years back. I shoot them once in a while, and my average-small hands do quite well with them.

But Pete's right about the "point-ability" of the Colts. My Walker is my favorite, as I've won plenty a Match with the mighty Horse Pistol!

Well, the 1858 Remington fits my hand better, balances better, and points better for me than the 1860 Colt. I'm only 6'1" and 290 lbs, so my hands must be smaller I guess than bigger guys. Hickock must have had small hands as well, as he used 1851 Navies. They also fit my hands and point well for me :v

The 1851 is more forgiven for big hands than the 58.

The 51 grip is what they used later on the 73 Peacemaker. A great grip. (not the one on the Pietta 51)

Capper, I have the same problem with the Remington grip, it squeezes the second knuckle of my second finger up into that wedge between the grip frame and the guard. It's uncomfortable just holding the gun, much less firing it, it seems like the weight of the gun is resting on my knuckle. I have modified the guard on a couple of them by cutting out the rear portion, turning it around and soldering it back in to make a square back guard. That provides enough knuckle room.
I've owned quite a few Remington types over the years and they all were accurate but the only C&B revolvers I still own are Colt replicas, a .36 caliber 1851 and a .44 caliber 1860. Between those two it would be hard to choose but I do prefer the longer grip of the 1860 and would be more of a factor to me than the caliber. The .44's are a bit more powerful but I don't hunt anything larger then rabbits with C&B revolvers and for that even a .36 is overkill.

I liked the .36 personally. First gun I ever had was a replica of a colt navy. I have big hands and it felt good and was easy to carry around and aim. Not saying the .44 isnt fun.

My first C&B was a 58. I got discouraged with the way it beat up my knuckle. I almost gave up on them. I thought they all felt like that.I also didn't like the way the cylinder pin would bind up so easily on the Remington. Anybody who claims it doesn't, isn't shooting BP.

Then I tried a Colt, and haven't looked back for 15 years. They just feel so right, and not having a top strap means nothing for BP loads.

Sometimes i'll sit in my chair while watching TV with the Colt in my hand pointing at stuff around the room. I'll do it for hours sometimes. Every time I shoot them I completely strip them down. Carefully cleaning each part. Oil them up and carefully put it back together. I'm intimate with each part.

COLTS ROCK!!

This post just reminded me so much of my first smokewagon - a kit built fully fluted '60 Colt Army - that I had to comment. I bought and built it in 1976 and it's the one handgun I will not part with. I have hand filed & fitted just about every spring, bolt, hand, etc. at one time or another. Kept it working well for 35 years. I know it inside and out, shoot it as well left handed as I do right, and just plain love that thing.

My second revolver was a '58 Remmy. I liked it, and have one now I like, but it just wasn't the same as the Colt. Since then I've acquired a lot of other cap & balls. There's just nothing like that first old Colt, though.

I have the answer for you. Cabelas will take the gun back. Even if you've shot it. I know this, because i've done it.

Send the Remington back in exchange for the Colt.

You should have got a return label with the Remington, so shipping will cost you nothing.
I gotta say, ETex, send it back! Cabellas is lacking in a lot of ways, but Pete's right, their return policy isn't one of them!

i guess ill keep it! im saving for the 60 now! if i got rid of it, it would be one i didnt have, and my meager collection would suffer the loss. i know that prob dont make sense but it would be nice to have one of everything no? yea im sick too! no remedy for this condition im afraid! as the old squaw tells me, im ate up with it, and i just blame it on you guys giving me bad advice! keep up the good work fellas :rotf:

I collect the ones I shoot.

I think of a collector as one who collects the original guns.

Collecting Italian reproductions makes no sense.

Send it back.

damn pete your hard!! :surrender: hey look at my post in perc.rifles and see if you can tell me anything!

I try to help without beating around the bush.

Your hand is too big for a Remington. You showed us a picture.

Trade it for a 60 and be comfortable.
