Same here. But maybe a .40 caliber ear plug inserted by an accurate and patient man might suffice?
Most all bear hunting in that era was with hounds. The bear took a tree or was put to bay by the hounds. Not much chance of a still target.
Of course the conical bullet existed then. My 40 caliber REAL weighs 180 grains, that would go a long ways in leveling the playing field.

Makes sense. I’ve never seen that in pics before, and being new to ML, was not something I thought of.
I have much to learn.
Thanks!

Lots of old southern rifles had ‘em. A couple of mine do.

Very informative and well written article!
One Texas Legend, “Big Foot” Wallace‘s rifle had a peculiar name (to me). He named it “Sweet Lips”. Even though this larger than life character in Texas History could be considered just a little on the “eccentric“ side, I still find that name choice to be an odd one, especially for that time period.
When asked if he had ever been “lost” during his time on the Texas Frontier, after a reflective pause he responded, “No, but I was bewildered once for about 3 days….”
Never let’em see ya sweat Big Foot! 😉
I thought Daniel Boone said that.
