Hi Guys- here's a .40 cal flinter I'm just finishing up. This was the set of parts that I got real cheap and got about half way through the project and discovered that the ramrod hole was way out of wack in the stock. I had less than 1/32 inch of wood on the bottom of the stock. :shocked2:

So...I ended up ordering another stock and this is the result.

The parts are from an unknown parts set, .40 cal Rice barrel, I think it is a Chambers large siler, brass mountings, and single trigger I ordered from MBS.

Thats real pretty and not overly flashy, nice work.

Don

Thanks guys, Yup Don I wanted to keep it pretty simple. Both to try and stay within my limited abilities and also to keep a simple kind of country look to it.

I don't know about you guys but I always try to imagine who a rifle like the one I'm working on might have been made for in the past. And since I'm a pretty standard blue collar guy, that's who I've often imagined a gun like the one's I build would go to.

I've ordered a Virginia from Pecatonica and I'm thinking that on that one I'm going to gussy it up a bit as if it were being made for a wealthier Virginian settler.

Hi Ian. I built a Lyman Great Plains Rifle about 20 years ago. Then I got back into it last year and this is my fourth since then. I've built two Hawken style guns in percussion and two of this type of flintlock.

Thanks Bob. I'm not the type to abuse my stuff but I do use it pretty hard and I'd always be way worried about such a thin spot cracking thru- :(

I could have installed a wear plate but it would have needed to go from the entry thimble all the way back to the end of the rr hole.

The funny thing is that I have been fiddling with that stock with the bad hole and I think I'm going to be able to use it after all. It is a real pretty piece of wood and I'd love to save it.

I had some epoxy ooze out of the grain when I glued in a dowel in an attempt to repair the problem. I thought that was a death knell but the other night I got to picking the epoxy out of the pores with a needle and I think with an hour or two's work I can get it looking lots better. Then I've just got to re-drill a new rr hole correctly. :shocked2:

I dunno... I've seen some done that way and thought they looked pretty cool. If your redrilling doesn't work, you might try it. Just might look really good.

Yup, you're right, I just might need to. Like I say it is a real pretty piece of wood so I think one way or the other I'll end up using it.

Thanks folks. I fired it a few times with Runnball a week or so ago and it seemed real nice. I've still got to work up a load for it but it started out within a couple of inches of where it needs to be without touching anything.

It is the first .40 I've shot and it had more "umph" than I was expecting. I've shot Runnball's .32 and the .40 was more of a difference than I was expecting. Nothing like my 54's mind you but quite a difference from the .32. Real fun to shoot!

Looks like a great rifle there...I envy those who have the skills and patience to build their own.
:hatsoff:
