Of those of you who own a 40 caliber rifle what are you using it for, target, small game, or deer???

Targets and small game for me.

NOTE:
Deer season just opened here and I am actually carrying my .40cal Late Lancaster in hopes of getting some first hand experience with "oldnamvet's custom .40cal x 200grns R.E.A.L. bullet that I range tested this summer.
But if / after I get some live tests with the R.E.A.L., my .40cal will revert to it's main purpose of targets & small game.

I built my virginia for small game and targets. But that is not to say I would'nt take a shot at a deer if the conditions were right. The top pic is from a couple weeks back and the bottom is this morning. They aint head shots but I never claimed to be a good shot :idunno: . This mornings shot took out the throat. You are gonna love a 40  cheap to shoot plus no recoil equals lots of fun :hatsoff:

Up to now my LL .40 has been used only on targets but I hope to change that this season. Though not legal in the ML season the regular season merely says .23 caliber and up. I want to try it on a deer and also on some small game.

I use mine on everything. Great for small game and is a great target rifle. Ive killed a couple deer with it and had no problems although I think other calibers are better suited for larger game. I have passes up on a couple shots I would have taken with my 50 had I had it with me. That being said if I only had one rifle it would be my 40. Lots of fun and cheap/pleasure to shoot.

Yes with that buck I used 60 gr of Fff and a double patched round ball. He only ran about 40 yards and dropped

I built it from a Tvm kit about 3 years ago. It's a late Lancaster with a 38 inch Rice swamped barrel.here was last years buck, it was with single ball load.

Those are two fine bucks for sure. You also did a good job on that nice looking rifle.

Here's my TVM LL .40.

I own a 40 but never shot amything other then small game with her. I am sure it will drop a deer no issue I just own a few 50, 54 and 58 that work great for deer so I have never tried. the 40 kills the targets and small critters just fine though.

I got a bit carried away; what can I say? Just wanted something "different" and figured GS was the ticket. It does look nice at that. Thanks.

Dale Atkinson built a .40 cal. flinter for me back in the fall. I take it to shoots and have done very well with it, bringing home a lot of meat prizes. He built it as a target rifle, double-set triggers and a crescent buttplate. I shoot a .400 PRB in front of 50gr. GOEX 3F. It shoots tight groups. I probably won't hunt with it as I have two squirrel rifles (a .32 and .36) and several deer rifles (.45, 50, .54, .62 smooth rifle)and several smooth bores (.62 and .73), all capable of one-shot kills.

I do find the .40 to be an "interesting" gun, in that I am constantly amazd at what it will do. First Frontier Militia of Bowmanstwon, PA has 75 and 100 animal silhouette targets as part of its aggregate match and the .40 is good-to-go on these as well as the closer targets.

I have shot balls as small as .389" and everything I have shot through it shoots well.
