What ball diameter do you think might work best for a .300 bore and .308 groove diameter with a 48" twist?

Don't know yet. Maybe.
It's a 31" long 15/16" across the flats barrel threaded for a 5/8" breech plug.

I would try a 2-1/2 buckshot (.290” dia) and patch combination that loads easily, with a felt wad (5/16” dia) between the powder and patched roundball. I’d start with 12-15 grains of 3F or 4F and work up a load from there. I use a 1-1/2 buckshot (.310” dia) in 32 caliber 1-48 barrels with 12-15 grains of powder loaded as I described. Inch high at 25 yards, inch or so low at 50.

With just such a barrel of 290 cal made by one G Tyler in the US probably meant for Squirrels but never used .So I made it up as a' Baltic bird gun 'flint & use 20 grains and a ball to suit and found it fine within the ranges rabbits might be got . The balls being irregular & I think big drop shot is made idea for these small calibers . fiddly to load but fun to shoot .

I have a 30 cal. W. Large barreled Ohio rifle that shoots the 2 1/2 buck (.290) with 20 gr. FFF. Bought an 8 pound bag of shot, it will last a long time. steg49

I have a 32 cal Douglas barrel on a rifle I built in 1976. The accurate load is a 310 ball and 20 gr. 3F. If I didn't head shoot a rabbit it blew it up pretty bad. Back in those days we never used a chronograph. I shot the load over a crony a couple of years ago. Around 1800 fps. No wonder the load blew them up.
