As time goes on it seems a shame that extra fifty barrel isn't shorter and a smaller bore. Anybody made a peashooter yet on a GPR?

The problem for me with the 15/16" small caliber drop-ins for either Lyman's or TC's is weight. Might be fine for range rifles but an extra pound or two out at the muzzle really cramps my style on small game hunts.

That's the truth ! I own a .32 cal t/c drop in and it's a great shooter but it tends too get a little heavy after a long hunt.

I like both the 50 and 54, however if I was going to hunt with round balls I'd go with the 54.

I think that to have a .36 on the GPR be the same weight as the .54 barrel you'd end up with about 26". You know what? That doesn't sound too bad.

I have a GM .32 IBS barrel that I had converted to fit a GPR. It's a little heavy. Not terrible.
I didn't use it much before I got my .36 flinter. Now I don't use it ever. :idunno:

As to the original question, I vote .54 too.
Wouldn't turn down a screamin' deal on a nice .50 tho...

If you don't like the .58 you own( which will do anything the .54 will do, and with more authority), why not consider selling it, and using that money to buy a .54? Unless you have sentimental attachments to the gun, it sounds like you leave it sit in your rack, or safe, rather than shoot it.

I would not give away an accurate 7mm Magnum( I assume) rifle, for the price of a .54 MLer. Its way too much rifle for most shooters, but then most of the owners don't reload, and know that you can reduce the velocity by reloading. Just 10% reduction in velocity does wonders for reducing "felt recoil" with that magnum rifle, but deer have no idea that the bullet that hits them started out slower. :rotf: :hmm:  :idunno: :v

Need some help here. I currently own a .32 and a .45 and I'm looking at a lyman in either .50 or .54. Which one would be better for all round shooting/hunting/rendevous? I will be trading my 7mm in for it.
i have 50cals and use them for everything from squirrels, to deer, to bear. so its a bit of a coin toss, the 50 is a smidge cheaper to shoot

Hmmmm. .54 just cause there is no replacement for displacement, oops that's hot rodding.

Let's see, oh yea, anything a little bullet in the right place can do a bigger bullet in the same place will do better. That'll work.

My small bore ML is a .40. Hard to see .32 and .36 holes at 25 yards and recoil is so light I might have shot a blank.

Anyway, when trying to decide between 2 calibers (or three), I always choose the larger.

Good Luck
