I shot some of the Hornady gr plains 375 or 385 out my flinter Hawkin cant remember but wow! I loaded with 90 gr 3 f and off the bench I couldnt see right after the second shot because of the recoil into my cheek was so harsh. That shape stock and me dont work well off the sand bag

Just curious as to what different types of conicals and loads of BP shoot better out of your T/C Hawken .50's with the standard 1-48" ROT barrels...any overshot cards between the slugs and powder? Stuff like that...I usually use my slug gun for deer but this year I'm going to use the ML. I usually just shoot prb's through it for the ml season but this year I want to bring the "big guns" out for general firearms and muzzleloader seasons. Thanks in advance.

Just shoot a PRB it will work just as well, probably better, all hype to the contrary not withstanding.
Less recoil, less pressure, less nipple replacement and the deer will die just the same.

Dan

I'm with Dan on this. I have been killing big(200#+, dressed) Indiana whitetails for years with prb's EASILY. They are over-achievers when it comes to hunting. If you are wanting to use a conical just "because"....I say go for it. Just don't think it will kill any "deader" than a round ball. It wont. Good luck  .

Maybe the stock is fine and it's the 99 grains (equivalent load of 2Fg powder) of powder under a 380 grain slug that's the problem?

Not picking on you LHunter. My comment is intended to apply to all of the folks who like to load up "Killer Loads" with massive amounts of powder under very heavy slugs.

I would be the first to say, "do it" if they were hunting Bison or maybe even a 300 pound wild hog but for deer, such loads aren't needed.
These "Killer Loads" will not make up for a poorly placed shot and if they kill anything it is usually the shooters shoulder.

Adding to the problem is the massive kick that are made by using these heavy loads can cause involuntary flinching because although the shooter "knows" he can take it, his sub-conscious mind will strongly disagree.

IMO, shot placement is everything be it on a target or on a deer and anything that could have a bad effect on that shot placement is a step in the wrong direction.

Just my 2 cents worth. :)

Zonie your correct a stupid me at that point I guess 70-80 gr would have been a better choice It was a trial run I havnt used them or the rifle for hunting in some time. I like my york county 54 I made from Brad Emigs parts better

I can shoot prb from my hawken all day long, but about 8 to 10 maxi-hunters or real bullets and its not much fun anymore. Wow what a diff. :surrender: :v
