I went out and shot the smoothbore Bobby Christian built me some more today. I have been trying to find a good rd ball load for 50 yds. Today the wind was blowing about 25 MPH from behind and to the left. After firing a bunch of rds with different loads today i finally found a load that seems to work good. 70 gr Goex 3f, half a lubed fiber cushion wad, a thin overshot card, and a leather patched .575 rd ball. The pic below is of the last 3 shot group i fired using that load. The 2 shots touching the bull are 1" center to center but the 1 high shot spread the group to 1 3/4" center to center. Not bad for no rifling, although i do have a rear sight on it.

That real cool. It,s very satisfying when a result like that and like you say with no rifling turns up. Them smoothbores are very versatile :winking:

I don't have a rear sight as I shoot it in matches. But I have found the lubed cushion wad over the powder makes it shoot better. I don't use the over shot wad didn't seem to help. I patch with a .014 cotton patch and 80 Grs. with a .600 ball at ball at 50 yds.
I think the lubed wad keeps the bore clean. I can shoot all day and not wipe the bore. I also shoot hard balls poured from WW lead.

Worked good for me. Every smoothbore i have had seems to like something different though. Never know till ya try. Take care.

Wow,that's a great target. Where can a hill billy like me get some? I tired of using the same old boring used paper plate target. I don't dare use a new paper plate or the old lady gets ******.

That is some shootin'! Who needs rifeling? I'm always interested in what your gun will do, as I have the tall, slender sister to your gun, made by Bobby.

I have no compaints at all with mine so far. It is a great shooter with both shot and rd. balls. In fact i think that Bobby is thinking about building one with a 36" barrel like mine for himself for deer hunting.

I see Bobby has one like yours in the classified adds.
Mine has worked great too. I shoot some clay birds, then move over to the target range for some round ball shooting.

I haven't tried it on clays yet but plan to. The ignition time is fast enough that they shouldn't be a big problem. I had Bobby build mine with a shorter length of pull than the one in the classifieds. Also had him put in a 1/4"x28 vent liner instead of a White Lightening so i can remove it it if need be. Works just fine. And the fowler is some buch lighter and better balanced than a rifle, easy to carry, easy to load, easy to clean, very versatile. Are you getting all this KHickam?

Well, contact Bobby and have him start on one for you. He does good work at a good price and it doesn't take long before you have one.

I got 2 in just about the same hole yesterday  (pure luck and I know it) the first shot was about 16" away! :rotf: well guess I'll just keep trying, I sure see no reason to put the scope on this one and try 100 yds just to see what it would do. :shake: :rotf: Fred :hatsoff:

You ought to try the scope on it just to see what it is capable of at 100 yds. Might be interesting to find out. May surprise ya.
