Are we talking about a kit/custom build or something off the shelf here?

Now if you want to put a 28" barrel on an Early Lancaster it will look just plain "weird".

But if you are say, looking at a Lyman Trade Rifle in flint, a good looking, well shooting rifle, that comes with a 28" barrel, that is quite a different matter.

The responses have all been "assuming" you are looking at a custom/semi-custom build.

The .54 Deerstalker that I have is only 24" and very accurate and easy to carry and shoot. I like the short barrel for hunting. I never could see the advantage of a longer barrel for hunting deer here in PA.

It's lighter, quicker and plenty powerful for thicket hunting but it bears no resemblance to a historical long rifle. It's cheaper than a hand made rifle as well. I like everything as compact and portable as possible. I like a sling, I like the fiber optic sights in our dark woods and I like a .54 ball. It works for me.

I have a Lancaster with a 44 inch barrel and a Early Virginia with a 36 inch. While I like the looks of the 44 inch swamped barrel best, the shorter is my main woods hunting rifle.

Hi,
I have a .54 cal. flint plains rifle that I built about 35 years ago.
I have used it for moose and it was great, in and out of boats, canoes, and trucks.
It took moose with ease.
My closest shot was about thirty yards, and the longest was seventy five yards. Ample power and ease of carry.
With 90 grains of 3f, and a tightly patched .535 ball, no problem putting a moose down with one shot.
All shots were standing still, and myself from a rest.
