I ain't even let the little hammerhead see my cherokee, I know what he would do. You're right, I would be looking for something else to shoot...

By the by, thanks for the heads up on Graf and sons.

I will look into it.

I have a Cherokee in 32 cal and a Seneca in 45, but if I'm after deer, it's either the 50 or 54 Hawkens that goes out the door with me. May use the Seneca one of these days during a doe season. I perfer larger and heavier loads for hunting.
With the Cherokee or Seneca you might run into problems using other than black powder. With the TC Hawkens for example you can install a hot shot nipple. The Seneca and Cherokee take a nipple that is different and as far as I know hot shot nipples are not available for them. If you do use a sub in your cherokee, make sure you use a nipple pick prior to loading it up for a hunt. Also use CCI #11 mag caps. So for this rifle I would recommend Goex black powder and that is what I use in my small cal rifles. In my Hawkens 50 & 54 cal it's Triple Seven 2F. Don't load your 45 cal Cherokee as hot as you would a TC Hawken in same cal.
