For those who do hunt with them - the harder balls will not perform well.

I dunno. A couple years ago I shot a doe with a 54 round ball that was cast with lead that turned out to be harder than I thought it was. Plenty of terminal effectiveness. Do half inch or bigger balls really need to flatten/expand?
 
i kill a small buck with a 58 round ball, i don't believe it was a 100% soft lead,,but it did a lot of damage,,pass threw
