First I would like to say hello to everyone, My question is, some years ago, I bought a CVA rifle in 58 caliber. It is a Hawkens style rifle. I bought this rifle at a gun show. The guy I bought it from was a private seller set up at the show. After a little bartering back and fourth, I got the rifle for $125.00 The rifle was/is in great shape. I don't think it had been shot very much at all. I know this is not the only one of these rifles CVA built. But I have been around muzzleloading rifles for almost twenty years, and I have never seen another one. I was wondering if anyone has any information about this rifle. Any help will be appreciated...Ray

I didn't know that CVA made a .58 cal. Hawkens. Could it be a CVA Big Bore Mountain Rifle? The mountain rifles have two barrel key (not one) and a 32" barrel (not 28"). I have heard nothing but good things about the Mountain rifle. Even the CVA Hawkens are good shooters. If it is a Hawkens, you got a good deal. If it is a mountain rifle, you got a better deal.

Cowpoke, this rifle came with only one wedge key. Trying to find information on this rifle has been hard. But there is one good thing about this rifle. It is very very accurate. I have deer hunted with it every year for a long time. And I have taken a deer with it every year, be it a buck or a doe. Thanks for the help...Ray

It is most likely the Mt. Rifle. The barrel will be 32 inches w/double wedges, the nosecap on the stock will be pewter, buttplate will be steel and if you are real lucky the barrel will have made in USA stamped on it! The .58 also did not have a patchbox. Pictures??

Rougue River. sorry I dont have any pictures. This rifle is 58 caliber, it has a brass butplate, capbox and it has a 28 inch barrel. I just went and measured it to be sure. And it has Spain on the barrel..Ray

It sounds like a Hawken, I didn't think they made one in a .58 . I'll have to keep my eyes open, wouldn't mind having one!

If you happen to find out any info, I would appreciate it if you keep me in mind. And another thing, this rifle is made in the Hawkens style...Ray

One of my hunting pards has one too, but to further confuse the situation, I'm almost certain he built if from a kit. He's out in the bush for the next couple of months so I can't reconfirm. I will say that it's a fine rifle and over time has inspired all of us in our loose group to add 58 cals to our lineups. To date I own four and another pard has two, none CVAs. His CVA is good enough that others in our group are hoping to find a CVA 58 of some sort, settling for something else if they find the CVA first. You don't have to shoot a 58 much to be real impressed, so impressed that your 50's and even 54's start gathering dust.

I have two Mt and two Hawkens CVA's. The Mt rifles have the two wedge pins. Yours must be the Hawken style. I have a old CVA catalog(80's) out in shop that I will look at later and see if it is in it. Dilly

I have seen a couple of CVA Hawken rifles in .58 over the years. The first one I saw I was surprised because I had never heard of one in .58. All I had seen is .50s and .54s. I saw a second one a couple of years later so I guess they made them but I have never seen them advertised.

there is one for sale on auction arms right now. i think there is some pitting in the bore though.

Well, here is mine in .58

It is a CVA mountain rifle. To the best of my knowledge, it is the only rifle done by CVA in .58.

I am wondering if someone fitted a .58 barrel on a CVA Hawken stock? :hmm:

CVA was the second rifle I had and it was a 58. I had to fine .565 balls for it as the .570 wouldn't load. was a very good shooter if you loaded it and fired it but if you let a ball sit in the bore it would shoot all over the place. it had a one inch barrell. I got a one inch 50 cal barrell and sold the .58.

I picked up an older CVA Hawkens in .54 caliber for a friend of mine. It was well used, but not abused and had fixed sights. We took it to the range and was shooting with FFg Goex. It would not group worth beans. I had him try some FFFg Goex and his group tightened up real nice. Kind of wish I kept that old rifle :hmm: And people are always poking fun at the old CVAs :rotf:

Hey Guys, thanks for all the responses. I have owned this rifle for alot of years, and I dont think it was a rifle that someone built and used a 58 barrel and a Hawkens stock,of course I could be wrong. This rifle also came with doubleset triggers. But even if I don't find out any accurate information about this rifle, I have been happy with it since I bought it years ago. This rifle is a real shooter..Thanks Again...Ray
