It happens every time I post a link to my blog from this site. For some reason Google and/or Firefox doesn't like this site and won't let it in. Just type or cut and paste the link in the address bar. It only happens with this site.

Couple a things.......

Textured means aged. Usually this is done with a bleach solution to give the barrel a weathered look. This one was tastefully done and done well.

According to the post in the blogspot the lock is an L&R. I believe the post here is correct in that it’s a Chambers Virginia.

Ken doesn’t make .58 cal barrels. They are actually .56. He does this so a patched .530 ball will work. (I’ve know Ken for 20 years, bought several of his barrels and visit on a regular basis).

Most importantly, I say none of these things to detract from this gorgeous piece, just hoping to clear up any confusion. Jack is a great builder and the parts used are quality parts. 1800.00 for this gun is a great value!

Lastly as you scroll through the blog (there are a tone of great posts and pics of fine guns) this one is dated April 24 2017.

Yep. The secret is out. I'm out to steal everyone's info. I can't help it if this site doesn't work. Look or don't look. Either way the world won't stop turning.
Raining now. Now I'm curious. I'll get my calipers out of the shop tomorrow and measure the bore. Might even pull the barrel and look for a label.

Ok.

Tommy: I removed the barrel and couldn't find any markings, but it is nicely glass bedded and has a wood screw in the tang. (The wood screw is in keeping with the style of the gun.) So I can't say who made the barrel. A .570 ball will just fit in the muzzle and would be a pretty tight fit with a patch. As soon as the weather lets up I may try some more shooting with it.

Wood screws in the tang were quite common. Especially in the more homemade/ mountain rifle styles of guns. Recoil is absorbed by the breech seating. The tang only holds the barrel in. With all the wood that is removed(lock, triggers, barrel, tang, sideplate) in that area the gun will break in the wrist/lock area no matter what type of tang fastener is used. Wood grain flow is more important than the type of tang fastener.
In modern times many a Jack Garner(the original TVM) rifle went out if his shop with a wood screw in the tang. A tang bolt slowed down production.

What is the weight of this gun?
6.4lbs. on my digital bathroom scale.
