Well I purchased a 62 cal smoothbore IBS barrel from green mountain to be used as a shotgun primarliy I could not pass up that "there being discontinued" line. If I wanted to shoot maxi balls and roundballs what is a good source for them, I have ordered from blue grouse before any other suggestions and where do I get the wads for it. I have a feeling I may be procuring a punch to make wonder wads. I am completely excited to hunt with this gun all the shots I have ever taken at game were 50 yards or less so we will see.

IMHO I believe your best choice for a single projectile would be a .600 or .610 round ball with .010 to .015 ticking patch as any heavy connicle would be too unstable in a smooth barrel.
Your powder charge would likely be around 75 to 90 grains of 2F. Up to 50 to 70 yds. this will preform very well with great accuracy.

I have the Flint version of that GM .62cal smoothbore.
80grns Goex 3F, Rush Creek .595's (from TOW) with Oxyoke .018" pillow ticking did very well...all stay in a 3" aim point sticker at the 50yds I zeroed it, shot 2 bucks & 2 does with it in November & December.

In addition, be aware that GM's .62cal smoothbores are actually only .610...to prevent patch failure and carry a good amount of lube, you'll probably want to use an .018" pillow ticking and that'll necessitate using a .600, or .595" ball (unless you want to hammer them in with a mallet )

Actually I'm switching from my .595's to .600's...already tried them physically and they still load easily with an .018"...have to use my short starter...will resero with them shortly.

My grandson(12) shot his frist deer this year with 150yr old double barrel 11ga(ball weights oz and half, forget the size, at 70 yrds out of treestand. They bought the gun at Log Cabin Supply. This gun will put both balls in paper plate at 50 yrds. He was using 70grs 2ff, shot it right throught the heart. Log Cabin thought it was a English Gun. He loves this gun. A little heavy too lug allday. I gave him a Bobcat last year. I just wish I could of had a start like that. I was 44 when I got my frist ML and only deer . I got the TC in 82 and got the deer in83. Never killed a deer with a modern gun to date. He going to be a good one, this is what grandparenting is all about. Dilly

maxi balls get out of a smoothbore just fine, just dont expect to hit anything with them. A waste of good lead if you ask me.

I bought 595 roundballs from TOW I think. I use Lehigh Valley prelubed cotton drill canvas .015 patches and it shoots em as straight as an arrow  . Haven't pushed the range out yet. Next time at the range I will se how it varies from 25-50-75-100 yards.

Good Luck :hatsoff:

how about using it as a shotgun? I am loving the idea of phesant hunting with it, a bag of #4 shot with wonder wads and powder same as roundball? I am going to check tow website I figure you get about 20 balls per pound figuring 62 cal to equal a 20 gauge so using blue grouse est. of $2.00 per pound that would be 10 dollars per hundred plus shipping. I will print this once I get my printer fixed or just shoot it with the new barrel. do you all figure a renegade would be a more appropriate stock to mount this barrel on?

I think you will enjoy shooting it more if you put it on the Renegade stock and not the Hawken. I have taken 3 turkeys with my .20 using it as a shotgun. I finally settled on 70 gr Goex 3f and 1 1/8 oz of $5 shot for them. Works good out to just over 20 yds.

myself Ive been shooting 600 ball out of my 62/20 as far as slug goes Ive tryed the "Foster" just a few times and cant say how well they shoot out of it except close, I can see how it was Hel..on Eflant's in Africa. :rotf: Fred :hatsoff:

If you hunt pheasants over dogs, the ranges are close, and #4 shot can tear them up a lot. I prefer #5 for Pheasants for that reason, and let the birds get out to 20 yds before mounting the gun. Shots are at approx. 25 yds, and the pattern is open enough that I don't miss the birds, and the shot has enough energy to knock them down very dead, without making swiss cheese out of them. If you are hunting the birds without dogs, you will probably wish for a gun with choke in the barrel for longer shots. That is when you want friends along who are armed with modern guns choked modified or full. The size shot is adequate at longer ranges, but the patterns suffer too much to make reliable kills. Compare down range energy figures in the Lyman Shotshell Reloading Handbook tables, for #4 and #5 shot.
