My smooth bores are at both ends of the gauge spectrum. I have 2 Brown Bess and a .54 smooth gun.
What gun I take out depends more on where and how I'm going to hunt than what I'm hunting provided I'm not going to be wing shooting. Wing shooting requirements push me to the larger gauge gun.
If it's going to be a walking hunt all day long, it's hard to beat that light weight .54
In all of them coarse shot (5 & 6) is the choice I like. Seems to hold pattern a little better and full penetration is a good thing.
I don't enjoy chewing shot with my meat.
If I only had one smooth gun, I believe.62 - 65 would be what I would go with.
Just my opinion.
