.62 Fusil Paper cartridges

Rolled up a few .62 Paper cartridges for my Indian made Fusil.
They all loaded very well, no problem pushing then down the barrel as I also lubed the outside of the ball with lambs tallow/beesewax mix. (85 gr homemade 1f powder, .600 ball).
I loaded them with the excess paper on top of the ball for a wad. Was surprised how the different papers burnt.

Computer paper didn't burn.
Paper Bag did burn a little.
Butcher Paper was the better one of the lot.
The add paper was to thin to handle much but was mostly consumed.

Paper used as cartridge envelope and wadding paper for smoothbore application doesn't need to burn and doesn't need to get consumed. It just needs to get blown out and then not smolder enough for long enough to start the forest or the grasslands on fire.

I've been using light weight brown packing paper with pretty good results.

Instinct, which could be wrong, has always told me to avoid slick, glossy, color printed "ad paper" in my bore. No telling what other chemicals one is burning. I generally avoid any printed paper.

Brown craft paper is often used for rolling cartridges. It’s sturdy enough to be twisted and tied without pulling your teeth out trying to tear it open

As mentioned, the paper only acts as a casing and wadding, to be shot out with the charge. I like that brown craft paper doesn’t leave as much burning residue as other paper, like newsprint.

The next step is to learn how to properly roll them (which is another topic).

I have been making Black Powder smoke for over 50 yrs off & on. Love it!

Lowes masking paper in the paint section is the best paper I have found for cartridges.

What is the thickness of your paper?

Sorry, I don't know specifically. I go by feel. I call it "light brown packing paper" but I think it's probably the same as the "light brown general purpose masking paper" pictured above or what's also often referred to as "light brown kraft paper". There are different thicknesses of "packing paper". If it's really stiff and hard to hand crumple then it's the heavy weight paper and that's not suitable for our purposes.
