greetings,

did a search for 62 - 20ga prb loads. came across some that had an over shot wad over a prb to hold the ball... is that right??

always thought a ball running over a wad in the barrel is not good. or, does the wad get blasted out before the ball??

TIA and ..ttfn..grampa..

Some people load the round ball just like a shotgun load, that is powder, over powder card, wad, ball, and over shot card. If the ball is patched, no over shot card would be needed as the patch will hold the ball in place.
I have tried loading this way a couple of times and did not really notice any better accuracy, although I did not really do it enough to give it a fair trial. I was satisfied with the accuracy I get with just a patched ball. To me it just took longer to load with all the other components. I know people who do load this way and feel it works better for them.

I have used this method for as long as i have owned my smoothbore. I have tried it with wads, cards, and dont see any difference in accuraccy.

In my 20 ga an overshot card will let a .600 ball roll down the barrel if I tilt the muzzle down..........This could be dangerous.......So I use a patch around my ball............If I were using a bare ball I would not use an overshot wad to hold it in. Just not enough friction at least in my gun.................Bob

I use paper cartriges in my Bess and they can sometimes go down loose(patched in the paper)I tried using a felt wad over the powder then the paper patched ball and noticed a bigger pop for my money.Did OK accuracy wise.Ive used cloth patch too but the paper works better for me....Mark

General question:

If my smoothbores shot any better than they do with PRBs I couldn't stand it, so a couple questions are:

Is there an alleged benefit to using a bare ball?

How is leading prevented?

I am with Roundball on this. How do you prevent leading in the barrel? Inquiring minds want to know. I would think you would get better results with a .010 or .015" patching around that .600 ball.

Is the tip on your ramrod flat or concave for a ball? If it is not flat it will fold the overshot card around the ball when you seat it and let it fall right back out. I found it out the hard way. I put the tip in my drill and turned it on high and held a file against the face ot the jag until it was flat. That solved the problem.

Each gun is different. Some respond best to patched balls some to bare balls with a card over them. Only way to find out what yours likes is to give them all a try. Good excuse to go to the range!! :winking:

greetings all,

thanks for your comments. howsomever, wasn't concerned about accuracy. it was the safety issue i was concerned about.

it seemed to me, any wad on top of a patched roundball is like putting an obstruction in the barrel. if that wad gets run over by the ball and gets wedged in between the ball and the barrel, there mite cause for a split or blown barrel..

so was wondering if i was trying to make an issue for myself where none exists. :hmm:

TIA again amd ..ttfn..grampa..

My TVM fowler (41"bbl) loves 60g of FF an Ox-yoke wad, a .600 ball and another Ox-Yoke wad.

Gives me almost a ragged hole off the bench at 25 yards.

If it aint broke... don't fix it.

My other TVM Fowler (30"bbl) prefers 60g ff, powder card, lubed wad, .600 bare ball and an over shot wad. But it gives me a larger spread over 25 Yards. Good enough to stop a buck though.

Go figure.
