If max load for colt dragoon is 50 gr. black powder, and 777 is 15% hotter would 50 gr. 777 be safe to shoot, or would the pressure be too high?? Not looking to shoot any subs, 777 does burn cleaner but at $29 per lb. i will stick with goex. Just something i was pondering. :v

Sir, if you mean temperature hotter, then you are correct, but if you mean pressure hotter, then you are also right [more or less].

To make it simple, 80gr of Triple 7 is usually held to be the equivalent of 100gr of BP - as with most of the substitutes, so your 50gr of Triple 7 is a VERY stiff load indeed, even for a Walker - ~62.5gr of FFFg. I use a load like that in a .45cal rifle.

Because Triple 7 is hard to get where I live, I use Pyrodex P instead, which has a similar burn-rate, and my top load for the Walker [a second series Colt #1816] is 'only' 45gr by weight.

By all means try your load, but its all over to you if you do. :surrender:

I have no intent to shoot that kind of load, i was just wondering if it was safe. i shot 777 for years, until i started shooting trad. mls now i am a goex fan and will probably never shoot subs again, like i said $29 per lb is crazy when real black is $19 per lb. and IMHO performs better. :v

My 3rd model Dragoon likes 45 grains of 3Fg Goex, a pre-lubed wonder-wad, and a .454 Hornady ball. Have to aim the thing about 12" lower than where I want it to hit (at 25 yards). Don't know IF I could get the other 5 grains in the chambers, as the balls are fairly close to the chamber mouths now as it is. I use a volumetric measure and tap the side of the measure to settle the charge, then top it off with more powder and then pour the charge into a tube for transport to the range. If I was to just pour once, maybe 50 would be doable, but it might actually be the SAME amount of powder going into the chambers anyway :hmm:

You're right on the mark with staying with real black, if for nothing else than the cost alone!

That means 'it's entirely up to you what you load and shoot' - that's all.

Be safe
was not trying to be a smart a$$, just did not understand what you were trying to say. :v
thanks for your reply :v

With 50gr. 3f goex i could probably get another 5 gr. in it (no wad) but 50gr is enough with grease over the end. I have to aim about 12 inches low myself at 25 yrds but at close range it is right on.need to try 50 yrds off a bench to see how that works. cant wait to try it on one of these FL. hogs. :v

I used 777 in a Pietta 51 Navy once and I was getting 1100 fps with a .375 round ball and I was elated. Then I took it down and the cylinder pin was wobbling in the frame after three clyinder loads fired........Ruined it.............I was a using 22grain equivalent spout to dispense the 2f 777.........Maybe I compressed it too much?.............Black only from now in in an open top Colt..............Bob

According to Hodgdon, the maker of 777, individuals should reduce the charge by 15% if they want to duplicate a blackpowder charge. I guess that mean you should stay 15% under the max charge. I have shot 777 in my percussion rifles before (I couldn't find and REAL blackpowder in my area) and it is expensive but isn't a bad powder. If 777 is all you have in your area, at least you are not shooting an inline.
