I always wondered why in the heck two are offered. Does one have a particular advantage or use that the other doesn't?

I use 10-32 for the obvious reason that it is stronger and therefore a little more durable and forgiving.

Pure speculation on my part; but 8x32 TPI has been used as the "G.I. Standard" for Jags, Patch Tips, Bore Brushes and cleaning rods for the M1903 right up through the M14, until they changed for the M16. Many civilian modern gun cleaning rods and accessorizes have also been made in that TPI for almost as long.

I do not like 8-32 because it is thin and more subject to breakage. Actually, I don't know why anyone would make a rod with 8-32 threads. There must be a reason but it escapes me.

Have you actually broken a jag or other tool w/ #8-32 threads?....Fred

the Fort Bridger Rendezvous is on today. I shot my .45 GRRW Leman (I made in their shop) at Bridger about 1979 when I didn't know much about black powder shooting. Cleaned the fouled bore part way through the match and broke my 8x32 brass jag off in the barrel. The range officer was unable to blow it out with a CO2 cartridge, so I was out of that shoot. Had to pull the breech plug when I got home and push the jag out. Cured me of brass and 8x32 jags. Like Flehto, I also put a rod tip on each end of the rod with one of 8x32 and the other of 10x32, when I make rifles for others. Mine are all 10x32.

I get 10-32 and always have a set of adapters for both in my bag. Any ramrods that come with 8-32 get drilled and tapped for 10-32.

All mine are 8-32 because all my non ML rods and jags etc are 8-32. Just don't use accessories w brass threads. 8-32 w steel threads are plenty strong.

Yep, I have broken them and stripped a few. The moral here is to make sure that your jag or whatever is well down into the bore before applying any thrust to the rod or you may bend the jag threads and break them. Also, do not use a brush or tight jag or you may strip the threads when you try to withdraw it. It is always the brass or aluminum ones that I have trouble with. The steel ones are pretty good and have never given me any trouble. However, most all of my rangerods are made of brass and I just prefer the more robust 10-32 threads on that account. I prefer the brass rangerods because they are less likely to damage the barrel crown....but I do have muzzle protectors on all of my rangerods even though they are brass and not steel....except one. It's for my .32. It's steel and has a nylon muzzle protector. Because of its size, it has the dreaded 8-32 threads.

8-32 for me. I like the fact that modern brushes/mops/slotted tips fit it.
