Gus, the hex symbols were all modeled, not copied , from good luck and long life symbols so if I inadvertently called down something bad please don't tell me.

Ron,

Good Humour!

I know very little about Pennsylvania Deutsche Folk Art, only that some shapes stood for some things, as well as some colors, though I doubt any were made to project bad luck or ill will.

It is thought the term "Hex sign" came from commonly used 6 pointed stars and figures. Six in German is "sechs" and Non German speakers thought they were saying "Hex." That and the fact they were not known as "Hex Signs" till the late 19th century, if not early 20th century, and always meant good things of artistic expression to the people who made them.

Thanks everyone. I do enjoy making dust. As Rick will tell you it certainly becomes an addiction.

Got one word "Outstanding" wish I could do a tenth of what you can do. Three hats off to ya :hatsoff: :hatsoff: :hatsoff:

absolutely stunning! (very nice photos, too) ... how do you get the curve on the flat horn? (just curious: it will be some time before I get brave enough to give that a try)...

congratulations of really lovely work!

MSW, the flattening took 3 heats to get it where I wanted. I made a form out of pine that had the curve in it and then started pressing. As the horn started getting flat I had to split the form and insert wedges to keep the form as close to the inside dims as possible. It was kind of an experiment all the way thru. Here is a picture of the form. You might notice that the spout is different. I had a couple of minor problems during the making. The horn fell off of the bench and the tip that you see in these pictures got cracked.

thanks for the post! that's a pretty cool technique ... gotta give it a try in my not- so- copious spare time...

looks wicked cool!

All I can say is that is stunning artistry. I would love to own a piece like any one of them but I can neither make them nor can I afford to buy them so, I will just sit at my computer and drool over what gifted people such as yourself are able to produce. Thank you for sharing photos of your work.
