Made by one of New England’s most noted riflesmiths,J. S. DUTTON / JAFFREY, N.H., it represents an impressive example of his finest quality work. Weight about 14 pounds. Overall length 43” with heavyweight 32” octagon barrel,.36 caliber deeply rifled bore.

Any relation to Zonie? :rotf:

That's sure a gorgeous rifle. I always love the ornate ones. I especially like the heavy, detailed buttplate on that one. Quite unique.

You don't see many with a scope. I picked up a heavy bench gun last year that was set up for a period scope, so I may put one on.

Maybe it's not a telescope. Could be one of the tube sights. They were popular and a lot cheaper than glass back then. IMHO
Fox :hatsoff:

Don't pick on Zonie he does his best and thats more than a lot of us do.

If I had that I would take it into the field just to watch the expressions of my friends! :blah: :haha:

Parson,

That rascal is 14 lbs. I'd want a couple a bowls of wheaties first before I tote that bad boy in the field for a day.

Damn, Undertaker. You sure do like them fancy rifles!

Keep up the good work finding these pictures.

I'm new to this great forum, (my first post!) and pretty new to black powder, so pardon my ignorance on this one, but is "J.S. Dutton" a current, modern builder?

I'm asking, because Jaffrey, NH is almost in my backyard (I'm in northern MA), and I'm wondering what experts, builders, etc., might be right outside my door, as I get deeper into these rifles.

Thanks in advance,
Rich
