Smoothbores with rear sights are called smoothrifles. Most of them are built to look like a rifle and have the same kind of sights. They compete either in their own special category or they compete in rifle matches. More than one rifle match has been won by a smooth rifle.

Smoothbores that look like rifles are smooth-rifles. Fowlers, fusils and muskets that have been fitted with a rear sight aren't smooth-rifles though they may have to compete against true smooth-rifles in some competitions.

Good point Russ, the true smoothrifle will likley have beefy barrels compared to fowlers/tradeguns to handle buck and ball loads.
