was always a rifle guy before (45 years, i'm 56 now) but this Trade Gun is so much fun that i've recently placed a TOTW order for 2 MORE diameters of RB ( been using .595 with ho-hum accuracy), to test what REALLY is most accurate......then the remaining 2 diameters will be smelted into the diameter it works best with. ( .595 / .600 / .610 )

also ordered 1/2" fiber OS wads to start testing & adjusting the Sky Chief load for best patterning in my particular gun.

reading & learning, learning & testing, testing and tweaking, tweaking and improving.
finally following Dads' advice to keep my mouth shut & my eyes & ears open.....

this is basically learning BP all over again like when I was a kid !!!
& LOVING IT !

I had the opportunity to get away from caregiver duties yesterday and do a quick walk thru the ranch where I was basically raised. Lots of pig sign but as the thermometer reached toward 80 degrees, I saw my opportunity waning to jump a sleeping pig out of its wallow. I searched thru several cedar brakes. But apparently not the right ones. ( wore myself out!).
Ended up down on the cypress lined creek with a good high bluff behind me. Heard one squeal twice, but couldn’t put a direction on it.

My smoothrifle is still loaded with buckshot. May try again later in the week when I have more time to stay after dark

Very glad to read this and I look forward to your reports on what works best for you in your gun.

Discovering smoothies was a epiphany for me. Don't get me wrong, I love my rifles. The ease of loading and cleaning, and the versatility was pretty eye-opening!

What kind of tradegun?

It is an el cheapo Military (Access) Heritage Chiefs model,
that I had to drill & chamfer the vent in, turn down and end cap a hickory ramrod for, & rework the lock to attain a safe smooth 8# trigger pull from the factory 24# pull it came with.....also had to re-true and case harden the sear because the notch was the ONLY part of the lock that was hardened, +/- 25 shots in and the sear was being chewed on.

now, with all the improvements made that I fully expected to have to make.....it's a decent to nice little gun.

I wore out a percussion TC 45cal barrel after 40 plus years. As an experiment I bored and polished it out to a 50 smoothie with slight closing progression to 8 inches of the muzzle. My intent was to use it for a shotgun barrel. Well I finally gave it a try last week with a 490/.015 and at 25 yards it will put holes on POA touching. Have to say as the OP that I'm rather astonished at the results. Even to the point of wanting to add a rock lock to my collection.

A smoothbore is a ton of fun. Glad you tried it!

Smooth bore is the common hunting tool in my neck of the woods. It is capable of handling any type of projectile, or projectiles. My chums and I have rifled barreled weapons also, but seem to have more fun with smooth bores using shot and ball.
