I left my flintlock pan primer somewhere at a Friendship. It is a brass cylinder with the plunger on the end. I have a spare, it's little brother, but it needs to be fed after about 20 shots.

Assuming it doesn't show up next time I shoot at Friendship (and there are a ton of places for it to hide there), I'll need another pan primer.

So I ask your advice in two directions. First, what is your suggestion for a good, functional primer.
Secondly, what might be some ideas for something a little more over the top, perhaps eye-catching or fancy, yet still reliable and functional.

I await your advice with bated breath....

By the way, if someone finds the lost primer at Friendship, feel free to keep it. I found it there a few years ago, so I guess that's how this primer makes the rounds. By getting lost, then found.

I like the big priming plunger type from track when just out shooting but when hunting I really love the brass type by Ken Netting. I have one in each of my bags that I hunt with.

A few years ago, I was at Friendship and I picked up a plunger type of spout for a pan primer. It was just the spout and I used a hollowed out piece of antler to fit it into. It does not hold a lot of powder but it is enough for probably 20 or so shots. It looks pretty neat. I use it but I still have my Ted cash brass pan primer that holds enough 4f powder to be able to shoot all day. It is a replacement for one that I lost at Friendship several years ago. Hmmmmm :hmm: I wonder if the one that you found.......naw, probably not. :idunno:

I like and use Meal-D from Goex which is the equivalent of Null-B and I like these 50 BMG case priming flasks as they hold about 240 grains and the shape makes the powder flow very uniformly.

M.D.,
That is an OUTSTANDING piece of equipment.
Thanks for sharing. Also, I was unaware of Goex MEAL-D. I use Swiss NullB, and while I'm not dissatisfied with that product, it's nice to know that there's another similar option.
Now I have to start searching through some boxes I have put away. Someplace around here is a BMG 50 case that I picked up and put in my pocket after an engagement in which I can safely say "Ma Deuce" was largely responsible for my being here today. God Bless Her...and Johnathan Browning. :hatsoff:

I'll send you mine... Bought it and used it once, literally.

IMO it's not needed, just another item to be lost.

I exclusively prime from the horn or cartridge depending on what I'm shooting.

I tend to shy away from the gizmos and gadgets... Made the mistake when I first started shooting and realized VERY quick the doohickeys and such are not needed.

Where do you get just the spout? I happened to find mine at a vendor's booth in Friendship but I haven't seen them for sale anywhere else. Where can I get one?

I like it. :)

I bought a small charger locally, took it out of the package and cut it apart for the spout and lanyard on the end.
Soldered the threaded spout portion into the neck of 50 BMG case and the lanyard into the primer pocket.
I have a friend that makes these without the lanyard but mine works better for carrying and not loosing it.

I bought one of those plunger tips and mounted it to a piece of elk antler tine. Used it a few times with a borrowed rifle (before I owned my own flinter) and it has been in a box for over 10 years. Utterly useless thing.

I have a small antelope horn I made into a primer for 4F, but I don't use it either.

Priming from the horn is quickest and easiest.

Being a newbie, I bought whatever gadget the sales guy said I needed. I have one of the brass plunger dispensers and find it pretty handy. Works perfectly unless rain or fog threatens, then it clogs up after a while.

My advantage was I a college student when I started and couldn't afford to buy extras. I was also fortunate enough to fall in with a group of guys that knew their stuff and they helped me. Reading and doing made a difference in refining my gear. Remember, the sales guy is there to make money and may not really have all that much experience.

That said, lots of great experience-based info available here.
