Sorry man, but the link keeps coming up as an error. I did a search for thread titles using “Average Age” as key words and got nothing.

In all honesty, running a poll like this every couple of months is quite useful. This forum is very popular in the blackpowder community, sizable community, active participants…collecting this type if polling data over time would have meaning and shows population trends.

I’ve heard that there’s a sister site to this one that is in-line specific…is that true?

Yeah, it’s called the Modern Muzzleloader forum. It’s mostly for discussions about in-lines but they do have a section for traditional muzzleloaders.

Totally not surprised. My daughter ran around at one of our N-SSA skirmishes a few months ago and took an age poll. Average age was like 64, as I recall. However, something like 3/4 of the people polled were over 70.

The average life expectancy of people in the USA is about 79.

What that means for our N-SSA region is that we have about 5 years to recruit about 30 more younger people into the organization or within 10 the region will start to plummet.

I started messing with ML guns in my mid teens starting with a TC Hawken and going on to a variety of things after that. Its been sort of off and on for me over time as to owning ML guns, but 40-some years later Ive always had an interest in the guns and strong attraction to the history associated with them.

Started back in 1970 with the BAR and contiue today hunting with my muzzleloaders and have never looked back. Now working on my grandson and daughter to get them interested in shooting the old flintlocks. I am in the 61-80 group.

I'm 77++++ and still making smoak! and when my wife cremates me I will make smoak again.
Is that a new way of spelling “ smoke” or am I missing something. 😁
you left out FASTE HORSES- WILD WOMEN & AND GOOD WHISKEY!

Never was into fast horses, although in the 40/50’s we used big slow ones to pull farm implements, good whiskey I gave up 10 years ago, that leaves wild women, still got her after 58 years😁😜

What frosts my 80 year old back side is I’ve been shooting and collecting since the early 60’s. Had that been in the black powder venue think of some of the pieces I’d have today. When folks like Val Forgett started thinking about the ACW centennial coming up and having some of the firearms of the era reproduced.

I'm 54 and have been shooting BP for around 30 years. Don't get to shoot as much a I would like but still take the smoke poles out occasionally

Well guys, the surest way to guarantee the eventual end of our sport is apathy. Even this informal poll points to it. Inlines, traditional, bpcr, doesn't matter. They're all in decline. A mention was made about hunting and I'm sure some here are avid accomplished hunters but I remember when NC regs only allowed traditional guns. Due to a decline in the number of hunters and harvest numbers in the primitive season, it's now open to all guns not using "fixed" ammunition. We all need to step up on this in some way. Volunteer with kids, take kids to the range, take time to show new shooters the old ways, but always always be looking for ways to promote our sport.

Yeah, I can’t get there through that link. Here’s what I keep getting…Oops! We ran into some problems.

and you meet new people every day!? by the way who are you? that is what I say to my wife in the morning!

I started muzzleloading in my teens and am now 75. Yes, I get called "purist", "dinosaur" among other comparisons and most folks consider me a "wonder" and rather odd since I've only hunted with muzzleloaders. I rarely see anyone else with a sidelock at the range and they're especially rare out roaming the bush.
