I purchased an older Spanish Hawken style percussion muzzleloader today. I ended up being more excited about the powder horn that came with the muzzleloader than the muzzleloader. Here's what I got. I haven't cleaned it up yet. I'm hoping you guys will tell me what I need to do to clean it up good and polish it. I have no idea what it's worth but I'm sure happy with the deal I made.

Ironwood,
Please, leave it just the way you found it!
You will never regret it. Any reputable antique
dealer will tell you the same. I must exspound on
reputable. Be very leary of the dealers that tell
you it would be worth more if cleaned up a bit.
Then offer to buy it.Don't deal with that
dealer.IMO

Thanks to everyone for your advice. I'll take your advice and leave the powder horn just like it is.

I suggest that you might show your horn or send some pictures to a museum or other source who specialize's in authenticating and dating historic powder horns, if you really want to know what you have. A lot of the time something that looks old, might of been made only a few decades ago. I know, I've been stung a time or two over the years!

Just something to think about!

Those look like upholstery tacks that are ringing the bottom to hold the baseplug. The carving on the neck reminds me of some of the exotic braiding you see on Shriner's hats. It may not be that old a piece.

I don't think it's that old either. I posted this topic in another forum. All I wanted to know was what I needed to do to polish the horn. The guys there, as you can see above, suggested that I do nothing to the horn. That's what I said I would do. Some moderator thinking the topic belonged here moved it here.
