Auction house said 1640s but who knows, I’m sure they just say that to increase its relevance to the English civil war. The odd ball to it is it has a steel plate which I’m assuming wasn’t super common ?

WOW!!! Congratulations !!! What a great addition. Thanks for posting. The fishtail butt stock with thumb cut-out seems to have been popular during the first and part of the second quarters of the 17th Century.

It would seem that the butt was extended longer, the current Butt plate is modern neat domed headers and that perfect scored line & gauge plate are modern , The false breach area is as Pukka observes unusual the dovetailed fore sight is unusual ,despite all the distressed rusted bits & have my doubts Many guns & armours where made in Victorian times the go into Newly rich houses that had No real aristacratic heritage , So adding a mixed bag of old & new gave their rooms some aged appearance . And perhaps this was just such a piece got up for that reason .
Nobodies asking me, I have no stake in it but this is my feeling , And guns' talk' to me you could say and this ones saying' Caviet Emptor' let the buyer beware '.

Since you seem to have bought this musket I hope I haven't spoiled your day. the two Rock Island Pistols are in a different league & there where forgers like Earnst Smitt .Who added old bits from wrecked / wormed original bone inlay to upgrade plain if other wise genuine guns & armours many Museums have these like the Wallace collection where Wallace & his peers strived to collect guns & the Smitts of this world where happy to 'find" these . They where not gunmakers (The buyers ) didn't ' see through' guns and by our standards just went for pretty & not the study of arms .Glenbow had similar 'upgraded' stuff The then Conservator of the Wallace collection (London) David Edge shewed me various pieces . Wallace probably didn't know or want to know . Hope that sits better
.Regards Rudyard
