was at the range last week and a friend from work and his dad showed up with a kentucky pistol I had sold him a while back. they put the pistol on a loading stand and opened a box with pellets and sabots. I thought I had taught him better than that. of course it just did not go off with the pellets, had to take the nipple out and put some 4f in. I was leaving so I left them my can of 3f. why the heck do people do this, just annoys the heck out of me, buy a trad. style gun and start stuffing pellets and sabots down the barrel..... flinch

Sounds like they're just starting out...and that's all the advertisement that exists about this hobby...modern MLs, sabots, pellets, etc...unless a person stumbles across an actual magazine about traditional muzzleloading, there's no barrage of advertisement going on about it at all...they hear and believe what's advertised...as I did at first...and assume that's gospel...assume that's "muzzleloading"...there's a lot to learn about this hobby and you may have helped them realize that
:hatsoff:

:hmm: Humm, did your friend have it converted into a breechloader & chambered for a .38 special? Before he bought the pistol, did you teach him how to load it and clean it? Did you tell him where he can buy black powder? If any answer is a no, at least there's hope. Try explaining why using blackpowder is better than why pellets are worse. You can catch more flies with suger than salt.

Pellets are available for c&p revolvers but I've never tryed 'em. That's essentially an inline of a sort though. I've never tryed 'em in my sidelocks - doubt they would ignite well as when I load mine I bump the breech area with my palm a couple times to knock some powder into the drum, ignites faster that way. Pellets is for in-lines as I see it.

I had him out shooting the gun, he has some real blackpowder, they just left it home. I don't know, seems some people think they have to improve on whats allready worked for hundreds of years. flinch

You can lead a shooter to the range but you can't make him shoot roundballs...

:hmm: I wonder if that logic would work with a horse and water? :hmm:

A lot of the problem is that this modern crap is all that the large stores (read Walmart) stocks so it's all you can buy. You have to mail order or know where the little "mom & pop" places are that have the real black powder, round balls, flints, ect. If Walmart would start stocking real black powder, and traditional stuff I'd be willing to bet that more people would buy and use them but when they go to get something to shoot their front stuffer all they can find is Pyrodex and sabots. :(

You spend too much time in deep thought, you are going to hurt yourself!

Thanks, basically what I was implying is that once the pistol was sold, the former owner lost control over what it is supposed to shoot...

One can still suggest, but the final decision now rest with it's new owner...

I am seeing more of this. I know of one fellow that was given a nice Investarms Hawken and he insisted that he had to shoot pellets and sabots. He needed to put 10g of Pyrodex under the pellets to get them to fire, but that was the way to go he said. I tried to explain, but a cousin of his told him that was what he should use. The next year he brought the rifle to me and asked if I could help him. The barrel was so full of rust you could not get a patch down it, and the nipple was frozen with rust. It had sat for the year without being cleaned at all. He is not interested in muzzleloading now.

Was in Wally world this weekend and thought I'd check the price on roundballs. Looking for .490 for my 50 cal rifle. I'd bought some Speer and some Hornady roundballs from them years ago.

The clerk who helped me acted like I was speaking Greek. He had no idea what a roundball was. All they had on the shelf were sabots along with some conicals. Needless to say they didn't have any BP, but just Pyrodex and Triple 7. Was really sad.

Once I explained a bit about traditional muzzleloading and flintlocks, he referred me to a gunshop about 10 miles away. Haven't been there yet, but will. Guess I better "bite the bullet" and start running some ball.

I know what you mean its the same way at the wal-mrt in Davenport even Gander Mountain has limited supplies for traditional muzzleloaders in fact all they carry are in-line muzzleloaders. No blackpowder at all and some overpriced junk called Jim Shockeys Gold I don' know or care who he is, the price he wants for that substitute black-powder is outrageous. My guess is he's some hotshot in-line muzzleloader.

Wow, I guess that I ma kind of blessed where I live. I have a Sportsman Wharehouse that just opened about 5 miles from me. They carry a pretty good selection of ML supplies, but, they do not BP, just the subs. I have to go to another place where they have a smaller selection, but, they stock BP. I don't even bother with Wally World.

good ridance I say, the ML community don't need people like that anyway. too bad a frunt-stuffer had to suffer because of it though.

If you think that's bad , listen to this . I went to a Wal Mart near me to get a box of 12 ga. shells with #6 shot . The clerk had no idea what I was talking about and I had to point to them so he could get them for me . I think maybe he was filling in for the regular guy , don't know and didn't waste the time asking . Dicks is just as bad . Most of the times I've been there no one is even working the gun counter . I went there once looking for a hard Arkansas stone and the guy had no idea of what it was . I don't go to Dicks much but it seems every time I do the cashier tries to overcharge me . I've been getting most of my stuff off the internet now .

I buy most all of my stuff off the internet, except for my pillow ticking and cleaning patches. I get that from wally-world. We have a local shop tha sells powder, caps and such, but his prices are out of sight.
I would like to trade with the local guy, but I just can't pay his prices.

Speaking of wal-mart,they had rifle powder with pyrodex and 777.They have all their muzzleloading gear together, but I thought it was strange that they had rifle powder with it.Hope nobody mistakes it .
