Any ideas? Apparently it's fairly hard but maybe has some use in a smoothbore.

It may have a hard skin from being quenched after casting.

Melt some down and see if the melted and cooled lead is softer.

If it's still hard make balls out of it.

Melt it just above lead melting temperature to make certain there's no zinc in it.
