Hi everyone,
I finally finished up my Lyman GPR. I used a vinegar treatment for the metal, and simple Tru-Oil to finish the guns stock. The stock was sanded to 220 grit, and the metal was finish sanded using 320 grit. Overall I am pleased with the outcome.
I want to share my experience about the vinegar treatment since there seems to be a fair amount of questions on the forum, and in case others are interested.
My first attempted at the vinegar treatment I wrapped the barrel in 3” strips of old t-shirt rags. I kept the cloth thoroughly wet for 4 hours. The metal didn’t really patina as much as I had hoped so I tried the vinegar treatment again. This time wrapping the barrel in 2” strips fairly snug. Instead of drenching the cloth through the entire process as before I soaked the cloth with vinegar using a spay bottle and left it alone for six hours. I didn’t touch it. After six hours the cloth had really began to show some heavy rust. I unwrapped the barrel and rubbed it down with alcohol and 0000 steel wool. That seemed to really clean up the residue left behind by the reaction between the metal and vinegar. The patina darkened much more, and I was happy with the outcome. All the other pieces were submerged in vinegar for 4 hours and then soaked in tranny oil for a week or so, until I needed the parts. The case hardened pieces didn't quite patina as well as the other parts, but hopefully that may change over time.
No powder through her yet. I did get the barrel nice and clean. I am having a heck of a time finding .54 roundballs. So until I track some down she will be sitting for now. I hope everyone enjoys the pictures. It was a fun build.
Sorry for the shiny pictures. The sun was beating through the windows when I took the picture. The stock isn’t quite as shiny as the pictures make it out to be. I am hoping to get some better pics of her outside eventually.
