Anti-Seize

I've never had a problem with removing nipples from my C&B revolvers.

I guess I should mention that I've also slept at a Holiday Inn Express.

:rotf:

I have a Remington revolver that must have been assembled by King Kong. There is one nipple that I have never been able to get out. I have damaged two nipple wrenches trying to get it out. This is a new revolver. When I got it, I wanted to remove the nipples and clean out the chambers. Five of the nipples came right out with no problems but that sixth one, I have never been able to get out. You can bet your booties that each nipple gets a light coat of anti-seize before being replaced. When, not IF, but when the day comes that I am able to remove that one recalcitrant one, it will get a dab of anti-seize. Meanwhile, I am going to make a reservation at Holiday Inn Express. :haha:

I'm not sure if I got it off here or where, and if I'm plagiarizing someone's post, I apologize, but in disassembling my "NIB" 1990 Navy Arms 1858 Remington, I had 2 screws that I COULD NOT get broke loose. PB Blaster didn't touch them. I discovered a mix of 50-50 mix of acetone and ATF (automatic transmission fluid) was supposedly better than most other penetrants. They did the trick on both my screws, that- and correct fitting screwdriver tips (thank you Brownells) and tapping the screwdriver with a small machinists hammer. Here's a link on that formula, including a comparative informal test. Again, this formula is not my own.
Acetone/ATF penetrating fluid test

Merely posting this as the previous poster with the stuck nipples on his 'new' cylinder reminded me very much of my own situation I just successfully overcame today!

How do you know each nipple is the same highth,i read once to use calipers from front of cylinder to top of nipple, any need for that?

Thanks, Wes. I had heard of this mixture. I am going to find some ATF fluid and give it a try on the nipple. Thanks for reminding me.

Put the acetone and ATF, 50/50 mixture, in a bottle with a lid and shake with gusto.

Let is sit a day or so and repeat shaking.

The specific gravity of the acetone and ATF are very different, definite separation line in a bottle. It takes quite a bit of agitation for the them to mix.
After the mixture goes in to solution, drop in what you wish.

Pietta for awhile was installing nipples in cylinders and then bluing them as a unit. This made the nipples almost impossible to remove.

Buyer beware.

"It's been reported that nipples tighten up during shooting. Maybe so, since otherwise how do so many people end up with stuck nipples?"

You bring up a valid observation.

When mounting bases on center fire rifles, after tightening the screws I would use a screwdriver and tap the end of it with a hammer to get the screws tight. With each tap the screw would move a minute amount.

I can see how the hammer hitting the nipple could tighten up the nipple. If you reversed the treads on the nipples, they might start backing out after sometime.

Other reasons for stuck nipples is improper lubrication and not removing them after each shooting.

Atf as it was called is getting harder to find
will dexron or mercon work?
I used Marvel Mystery Oil, and it seemed to work just fine. It is considered by many old-time mechanics to be like liquid gold, as far as its value in mechanics- everything from fuel additive- to lubricants- to cleaners in engines. Available at any auto parts store.

I have used anti-seize and Lubriplate (white lithium grease)both with equal success. I use it whether I think I need to or not after buying a used revolver with with the PO decided it wasn't necessary. 'nuff said...

Nearly anything will serve to keep nipples from seizing if you take the time to remove them at every cleaning. For the only-once-a-year shooter, an actual antiseize material would be a wise choice.

I remove mine for each cleaning, and use either tallow + beeswax ball lube, or Frog Lube.

The only stuck nipples I've ever encountered is with a "never fired" stainless ROA I got a few years ago. Previous owner substituted what looked like red Loctite. It made for a challenge to remove them without wrecking anything.
