I see that Hornady has discontinued the Great Plains Bullet in .45 caliber.....any good substitutes available?

Will have to experiment with different ones. Rate of twist and charge will dictate.

If you cast your own, I highly recommend the Lyman 330gr HP Gould Mould. Mine with pure lead casts about a 347gr bullet. Shoots fantastic and the deer hates them!

Also several have had great experiences using a modern pistol bullet mold. Some are undersized and have to be paper patched, but some shoot as cast.
They add much more energy to the down range aspect and have a higher BC.

If I was going on a once in a lifetime hunt I'd want the best equipment for the job. If you're lucky enough to step out your backdoor and hunt elk your needs will be different.

Greg, over the years .45 minie molds have taken up residence in the fun box and I've yet to find my fun gun to shoot 'em in. What do you have? Have you tried hollow based designs other than the buffalo bullets?

I'm kinda threatenin' to get a barrel for them but have yet to decide what to put such a barrel on.
