Dear sirs

My .50 deerhunter traditions kit comes with this sights:
https://traditionsfirearms.com/pro...r-sidelock-15-16-inch-octagonal-barrels-A1571

Problem is that i dislike plastic sights very much since, in my very own opinion, it does not stand even normal use, letting you down when you need most.

Would you sirs reccomend any metal rear and front sights ( open sights, if possible) that are compatible with my octogonal barrel?

If there is any plug-and-play system i would prefer, since this plastic sights connects to the barrel trough just one little screw.

Thanks a lot

take note that with the sights referenced you can use the rear with your barrel screw hole but, for the front you will have to file a dovetail for it.

Hi all!!

Thanks for the input!!

wouldnt exist any plug and play metal model?

Im asking because theres no gunsmiths around here and im afraid of make a veeeery bad service installing a dovetail.

I think a plug and play model would fit better to my very limited experience.

Thanks!!

The rear one, by itself is $15. That would be a big help since it's easy to put on, and completely adjustable

Hi all!

thanks for the input!
i was thinking..

and what about to get the deer creek sight set, install the rear sight right away and then order one of these sight ramps:
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/7...5-dovetail-slot-for-octagon-barrel-steel-blue

or
http://www.midwayusa.com/product/1...5-dovetail-slot-for-octagon-barrel-steel-blue

I mean... I think i could install one of this ramps directly onto my octogonal barrel and then put the deer creek front sight in its dovetail slot.

what do you think? it is a good or bad idea?
does this kind of ramp fit in muzzleloading rifles?

and if it does work, what kind of ramp should i pick? the taller or the lower one?

thanks!

Hi, sorry about the absence.

I was retired from my shooting activities due health issues but I'm returning now.

There are 2 pictures of my rifle in annex.

Now, a long time after my original post, would exist any kit that both front and rear sight could be installed in the existing drillings, with no need of cutting dovetails or make another drillings?

Im certain that I would do a bad service if I try to cut anything, so I prefer a plug and play kit

Cheers from Brasil

It may take some online searching but I'm sure you can find what you need, although it may require finding bits and pieces to assemble. I couldn't make any suggestions right off the top of my head.

Might help if you can advise us on distance between screw holes for each sight.

Looks to be a lot of holes in the area of the rear sight which could make it easier to locate a sight base that would flange up.
Is that a screw through your current rear sight?

All those holes might make mounting some kind of sight interesting depending on what size(s) they were tapped for. I'm sure somebody on here could tell you what the originals would have been.

As for sight heights, personally, I would endeavour to find replacements to match the heights of the originals. A tang mounted sight might be easier both to install and use for you. Something like the Lyman 57-SML. My old eyes needed something easier and since I grew up with aperture sights, it was easy to make that choice. Luckily I had a factory hole on the tang of my rifle and drilled and tapped a second one in my garage.
I don't think the front sight bases you found are a bad choice. Which height you want should be a personal preference.
You might find some filing is required to fit the sight in the base. Whether you file the sight or the base is something you need to choose for yourself. The couple of times I've replaced a sight, it was into a dovetail on the barrel so I worked on the sight. On the other hand, if you file the base, finding the sight isn't working for some reason, you might be able to return or exchange the sight for a different one.
A simple triangular file with a lot of patience and and repeated attempts until it fit to my satisfaction worked for me.
