I got a reply stating Hornady had received the balls I sent in within a day of receipt. Not a word since then. My arthritic joints are going to hate me, but I see no alternative but to fire up the pot and start casting. This is going to hurt a bit.

I've always found Hornady's customer service to be first rate. For what it's worth, on the rare occasion I have an issue with a Hornady produce I don't start off talking to customer service, I go straight to their tech. guys. Be prepared to talk guns for a while.

Yep. Same here. Great company, products and service.

Pretty much all I shoot. Wondering though....? My .36 will NOT group. PERIOD. Could it be I have a bad patch of balls full of air? I mean NO group, none close to each other.

I will buy a box and see if fresh balls help. If not I will soon hae a .40 with .36 inscribed on the barrel (Hoyt ya know  )

Yeah, for anything CF or CF loading related,, they are definitely a player in that game.
I'm pretty sure I'll never give them another dime for anything they make for our ML needs.
They are following the money and I don't blame them,, but making ball or any other projectile within a reasonable tolerance for use in Trad ML is obviously 3rd or 4th on their to-do list.
Basically they have the machines that can do it,, but they just run them "as is" with no care for the market.
I'm guessing, but after the military contracts, and then the CF consumer market, and probably others,, us little trad ml folks,, aren't even considered as a secondary market,, just something they should do,,
Issues of quality for their swagged ball have been around for decades,, the only thing that changes is someone else interested in eliminating variables,, notices and decides to post on a forum.

I seriously doubt that there is any air in a Hornady RB.

I have seen their production line a couple of times. Stop in, they will give you a tour.

They melt their own lead into ingots, long cylinders. These go into a machine that squeeze the cylinders under high pressure and lead rope comes out the other end. This gets spun into a spool. From there it can get reduced again as it goes into the machines that makes the round balls. The round balls are placed in a plastic cement mixer with a couple of rags thrown in and tumbled until the operator stops it. The packages are loaded by weight.

I would assume any variance is due to the dies are not all exactly the same. Some might get worn?

I used to shoot Hornady balls.. They always were good to me.. My son casts for multiple guns, one day he says I can make those for you.. I had coupla hundred pounds of pure lead for fishing jigs, off to the races :hatsoff:

You have been at this game long enuf to know that could be caused by any one of lebenty-twenty-dozen other factors. Mebbe, even the guy holding the rifle.

YA...BUT after 32 trips to the range with it I SHOULD have had at least one good day shootin :idunno: :blah: ...sides the other guns I shoot after gettin all antsy pantsy at it seem to hit where the are aimed?

no..... last time out 2" group at 75 yds off Corolla door frame. :hmm: mayne I need to camo out Corolla and shoot off door frame :shake: G&F ossifers wouldnt like it at ALL!

I just think when I saw his rack I freaked, was expecting a smallish nice 2-3 pt mulie. Like I said I HAD FUN

Just a brief follow up. When I contacted Hornady regarding the poor quality .490 ball, they requested I return all 5 boxes. Unfortunately I was only able to return 1 box.

Today I received 5 boxes to replace the defective product. Remember I only sent them one box.

BTW, the new product is very good quality. Very well done Hornady, very well done indeed.
