Squirrel season opened today in Michigan and I decided to take my 18 month old beagle Dolly. She did real good last winter on rabbits and she has shown a real interest in the squirrels this year.

Every day when I drive to the post office in town, she rides along and the town squirrels drive her nuts. I have to be sure and keep the windows up or she'll jump out after them.

I wouldn't have gotten these two this morning without her. She tracked and tree'd em and kept em busy until I could get in range with my .32

I think she'll be going with me next time too, we make a good team for those bushytails.

Squirrel hunting is my main small game hunting....used to be ruffed grouse but at age 75 it's a little too strenuous. Through the years I used 2 German Shepherds and they were absolutely foolproof....when they "signaled" treed, it was just a matter of walking over and shooting. After awhile it wasn't much enjoyment just being a "gun" and coming in for the kill, even though the limit was reached on every outing. Nowadays, I don't use a dog and have much more fun "hunting" the squirrels and treasure every minute I'm in the woods. I use a .45 cal. flintlock "Beck" that I built in 1981 and due to the cal., head shots are a must. But, as to using a dog, to each his own.....Fred

Best squirrel dog I ever met was (believe it or not) a dachshund chihuahua cross. Little feller need to be carried on long hunts, but he sure could find bushies.

Dolly is a cute pup  good shootin :v

I love watching dogs work whether its hounds barking, pointer, or retriever they sure do seem to enjoy it.

I am envious, I had a fiest-terrier mix when I was a youngster and man that pup was good on small game.
Won't be able to do any squirrel hunting this year as am trying to shake loose for a WV deer hunt, but from the look of that beagle you are going to be busy this fall/winter.

Nice lookin dog!Our dog we had when I was a kid used to bring dead squirrels and dead rattlers to my grand dads door step.A dead rattler will get your attention in the mornin

I have Beagle named Ivan.He was rescued from the side of the road after someone threw him out of a moving truck as a puppy :cursing: !He is 3 years old now.Timid to handle due to prior abuse. But he loves hunting rabbits and squirrels! He really comes to life in the field :) .He also doubles as a early warning trip wire at home.He has different barks for Armadillo,Bear,Bobcat, coyote, deer, dog, people and snakes! He has accounted for 8 copperheads cornered!

I've never hunted anything with dogs. Always been curious about it though. I have old english sheepdogs so they'd be pretty hopeless anyway! LOL

She sure is a cute pup. :)

Great looking beagle. I've had at least one, if not two beagles around for the past 25 years. Never thought about using them for squirrels, though. After the last one past on, I swore that would be the last. As I get older it seems more difficult to see them pass.
I showed the pic to the wife and now she's talking that we really need to get another.
You've got a very beautiful companion there.

Thanks guys. Ya, she's a sweetheart and a great hunter. I've had beagles all of my adult life, I love em they make great pets and when it comes to hunting you get more time in the field than with any other breed. Our rabbit and squirrel seasons are long so I get a lot of hunting in with my little buddy.

Here she is the day I brought her home.

I have never heard of using dogs for squirrels until I saw a copy of the periodical," Full Cry".

Up here in New England, squirrels are practically ignored.
